Has anyone built their own hydro feed onto their chippers? I can get parts for the hydraulic motor to turn the feed roller, a flow control valve to regulate the speed of the roller, and a jinma type feed roller, springs for it to ride on etc, parts are out there just wondering if anyone has atempted this, as a factory hydro feed is big bucks for my patu dc40 chipper. Great chipper, would help to feed if the chute was angled more like wallenstein bx42. Your thougts on this??

I have a 8" Bearcat I would like a hydraulic feed on also. The kits are very expensive and most of the cost ( I assume ) is the liability insurance. All it takes is one serious injury, the person retires, lawyers gather, and the five seconds of being inattentive result in two years of litigation. Huge checks are exchanged and the manufacturing firm has second thoughts of expanding the business.
I don't know if I would want to alter the machine that has a proven design. If one did he should keep everyone else 50 feet away when it is operating to eliminate problems. ( and don't ever sell it modified ) That said my chipper will be left in the present condition or traded for one with auto feed. Just my 2 cents.
I have a 6" Vermeer chipper which has the hydraulic feed. That is an awesome feature to have. It senses the motor speed and slows down the feed rate if the chipper is slowing down for a hard piece or clogging up with too much wood. Any other chippers if I get them will have this feature. Along with reversing the wood out. Too many near miss or not so near miss injuries for the Chuck and duck type chippers.
You might even do a Craigs or Ebad search and see if there are some chippers with blown motors or something you can salvadge the feeding mechanism and hydraulics.
