I have a CC2042 w/ 18HP Kohler. How often do you guys change the Trany fluid , if ever? The chart says 6 qt's of expensive fluid = expensive stuff.

Thanks.

The manual for my 3235 recommends changing the tran filter at 100 hours and every 50 hours thereafter. The tran oil is recommended to be changed at 150 hours and every 100 hours thereafter. This seems like a little overkill to me since the hydrostatic drive is much cleaner than an engine where you have piston blowby and greater heat. My old 1450, which used Hy-Tran oil instead of synthetic, which is supposed to last longer, recommended a filter change every 100 hours. I don't think a complete oil change was even listed. I had the tractor 26 years and changed the tran oil once when I replaced a leaking seal between the transmission and the differential. YMMV

I (stupidly) dumped all mine @ ~10hrs during a transaxle filter change. You will loose the entire contents of the transaxle when you spin-off the filter. You need to either be real quick, cork the threaded filter tap, or lift the front end WAAY up prior to removing the filter if u dont want to dump all the trans oil. I do less than 50hrs/yr so it will not change mine again for 3-4 years. I'll change the trans filter (and replace ~1qt of lost fluid every other year or so.

John-

I went back and forth on this with my dealer. His shop mgr. strongly advised me to save my money and not do anything until 100 hours (change the filter). After I did that, I topped off with a quart of new fluid. He said it is a waste to change the filter after the first 10 hours. He said wait until 100 hours and I did just that. As far as the fluid, you shouldn't have to change it unless its contaminated with water or dirt. That is a pretty large high pressure filter, so its going to trap what it needs to. I've been told repeatedly by my dealer, they've had 2000 and 3000 series machines with 400 or more hours that were seeing their first tranny filter changes and the fluid and internals of the filter were still clear and working as new. I love the fact there is a filter to change, but, its not like it needs swapping out like your engine filter. I am keeping with a regular 100 hour filter change, but, I'm not going to change fluid, just top off.
