I had a dealer tell me that I could use Dextron trans fluid in my 1720 hydraulic system, was he correct?

I think a comercailly available fluid like a JD303, ohytran, or universal transdraulic fluid would be closer to the mark.

These are available at most dealers.. ( NH is 134d fluid ).. etc.. Tractor supply carries a universal tractor fluid.. and wall-mart has a universal tractor fluid..

I would not use Dextron Transmission fluid. Everybody in the world carries the right stuff, any autoparts store, Wal-Mart, Tractor Supply. You need hydraulic/transmission fluid that says on the can, "comparable to JD303". I don't know for sure that Dextron won't work ok, but why take a chance?

I hope this thread continues. I have asked before about the red fluid that comes in the tractors from Japan. Nobody has answered what it is yet. There are different numbers on the trans of the powershift and the manual shift tractors. I do know that after changing from the red to the JD303 some of my tractors make strange noises until they warm up in the winter. They don't do that with the " red " fluid.

ATF doesnt thicken up like JD303 or the other fluids do
and your machine wont squeal in the winter, plus if you are low on fluid you can buy a quart at a time, instead of 5 gals.
I have used ATF. in all my power shift tractors for years
after my supplier told me thats what they use & recommend in Japan.

Ernie, are you saying ATF, (Dextron), "is" the best stuff to use, possibly even in geared tractors? In the 3 years I have had my tractor all I have heard is "JD303".

I inquired in Japan about this ATF. issue and was told that they had been using it for years, and when they got their tractors new from the dealer they came equipped with ATF.also

I have been using it for many years. with no problems at all,
in fact the power shifts warm up faster in the winter with ATF
in them.

I do not use it in geared tractors ! 1401-1601 1701 ect.
only in the power shifts.

Lots of places carry 2 and 2.5 gallon utf containers.

I think atf in a hyd system may be ok.. as I see tons of people putting it in power steering systems.. etc.

I wonder.. does ATF have any ep addatives? Atf for a completely hydrostatic system sounds fine.. but if there are any gears... I think I might want ep addatives..

I'm only familiar with the gear yannies.. are those other models complete hydrostatic.. or shuttle style hydraulicly clutched units.. that still have a rear final gear type drive?

I don't know the answer, but would not be afraid to try it.

ATF has been recommended for many manual trans auto applications in the past, including Chrysler corp's 440/426 and hemis with the fourspeeds. So I don't think load additives should be a problem!

It also serves as the lubricant for the gearsets in all automatics as well as the hydraulic fluid.

But, I tried it in a PTO powered backhoe pump and it leaks from weak seals much worse than the recommended 20w motor oil.

My son has a Ford F-250 with a 460 motor and standard shift. It uses ATF in the transmission. It has hundreds of thousands of miles on it and trans is in the best shape of the whole truck.
I just had an auto rebuilt in my F-350. It is full of gears.
