Hydro Fluid for a 1720

To answer your question, the powershift transmissions are gear transmissions with hydraulic (or hydraulically actuated) clutches. I have never had one apart, but from the parts diagram, it would appear that there are two clutches - one for forward, and another for reverse. The transmission is absolutely crammed with gears and shafts.

Those internal clutches will slip. I once tested this on one of my YM1110D's. In gear, pto in gear, mashed the brakes. The engine loaded down, but didn't stall, tractor came to a stop, pto still turning. Diagnosis - internal (hydraulic) clutch slipping.

I have a couple of quarts of Dextron in my powershift. Works great, BUT, it has started to have several minor leaks thatr were never thee before. My guess, probably caused by the increase in detergents.

I could care less about the tranny discussions here.. what I'm wondering is .. is ATF a good rear final drive lube? I don't see any gear box's recomending ATF over ep gear oil...

Since these yannies use a common sump for the tranny, hyds and rear end.. I would think whatever oil is used would need ep addatives.. like the unit-trans oils do..

Not my tractors or money.. so do whatever... Just my opinion.

I realize that trannies have gears...and I know that everyone is trying to make the point that every tranny they have seen has lots of gears and shafts.. that's not the issue here.. the final drive is the issue... typically final drives need ep addatives ... Does ATF have these addatives? JD303 and unitransdraulic oils DO.

While I'm sure that ANY oil is better than no oil... I would imagine the diffy would be way happier for the correct oil...

I see at least one other user has posted that his manual states jd303 for both types of system.. etc.. that seems to pretty much definatively answer this question..

Im sorry I didnt mean to ignore your question about the ATF
Im still waiting for an answer from japan
You make a very good point about the EP additives needed.

Almost every power shift that I have looked at comes over with ATF. so they must have a good reason for using it over the other lubricants.
I will let you know what I find out.

/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif I didn't mean to sound bent out of shape... just hard to convey thoughts via typing and smiley faces sometimes /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Its just that while I do see gear to gear setups using atf in trannies.. every ring/pinion setup I've ever seen was either gear oil.. grease.. pourable grease.., or a multi purpose oil that has ep modifiers specifically for those extreme pressure surfaces. and that includes steering boxes on some tractors.. etc

At question also is the detergent factor of an ATF.. verses the 'non' suspension factor of a gear oil.. where the idea is to keep the metal flakes out of circulation..

I have a suspicious feeling that since atf and pow steer. fluid is Sooooo cheap.. that that is what it is coming with.

When I bought my 'factory reconditioned yanmar' a long time ago before I knew better. it looked decent.. had nice green coolant... really green... I used a coolant sg tester.. tested same as water... for all I know it was food coloring?

I am very suspect of any fluid I see coming over ina tractor.. as anything above minimum is coming out of their pockets.

Same with grease on the jinma's I've seen at the economy dealers... just the plain brown el-cheaop 5$ a case grease.. oozing out all the zerks...

While the manual and shuttle trannies probably love the atf.. and the hydraulics love it too.. I'm concerned that the most abused parts aren't getting as good lube as possible.

I've tried to research ATF fluids on line here for a couple days.. and don't see ep addatives or claims on manufacturers sites.. though as soon as you look up a UTF or gear oil.. even a plain 90wt gl-1.. you see ep addatives and claims right off the bat.
Makes you wonder.... And inthe end.. I'm really just concerned for the well being of the tractors anyway... ( that's why I collect and restore antique iron.. )

I just got a tractor back with the hydraulic pump making a noise. It was supposed to have been serviced by my importer. When I pulled the plug, it was full of the red fluid. The screen was full of something that looked like fine hair. It wasn't metal I tried to get it off with a magnet. Does anyone have a clue as to what it might be? I would like to be able to tell my customer how to keep it from doing it again. I relaced it with JD303.

I know a guy that had a YM2210 that had something on the screen that he said looked like algae, he cleaned it off, flushed the transmission with diesel refilled with 303 and said that he never had any more problems.

This might have been that. It wouldn't rinse off with paint thinner but soap and water worked the best.
