hydro whine

I have owned my baby blue TC45D for over two months now, and I have noticed a low pitch hydro whine when turning or running in low RPM 4WD. Is this normal? Noise can be interpreted as inefficient transfer of energy. Since this is my first hydro unit, I am a little unclear as to what to expect in the way of break-in or normal operating conditions.

On a second note, the discussion of tire filling as a significant upgrade became very clear to me on the first day of training, especially when I drove over that first stump or rock pile and the tractor rocked past my vertical comfort level.

I don't think you're hearing a hydro whine. I have a TN65 without hydro and the thing flat out whines when you're in FWD. I think the front wheel assist geartrain has straight cut gears. I kind of like the noise, it reminds me that I'm in FWD when I go to drive it home after working in the mud.

Bgott may be correct, but my TC45D whines whether I am in 4WD or 2WD. About the only time it doesn't whine is when I am going downhill or at road speeds. I don't mind it, but it sure is there. Inefficient? I'm not sure, but I'll keep my hydro tranny just for the convenience and the infinitely variable speed. There are fluids which are reported to produce less whine, but I haven't tried any of these. I have over 200 hr on my tractor and on a cool/cold morning it is pretty loud.

I agree with Jim. Cold seems to cause it to be louder. Under no load, as in going down a hill, it all but dissapears. Also, 4wd does not seem to have any effect on my TC40D. Othewise, it's always there. My neighbor's JD seems to be about the same, but have noticed Kubotas seem to have a little less whine.
