Im looking for any suggestions for relief to hydrocodone side effects.. My wife had her gall bladder removed laproscopically on thursday and starting about 4am this morning she is having really bad nausea followed by vomitting.. The dr called in a nausea drug, and she took the first dose around 5pm today..

any suggestions that worked for you??

Those things always made me sick as well. The dentist prescribed me some after a root canal and they had me spinning/nauseated. I tossed them and took some Motrin instead and was better off. I'm sure your wife is having alot more pain with the gall bladder than I had with my tooth. I don't know if the Motrin would do her any good. Better ask the Doc about it. I hope she feels better soon.

My Wife always ate a little whenever she took this medication, a few saltine crackers or something. It seemed to help her tolerate it better.

Hope the Mrs. is feeling better. I've had laprosocpy once and my Wife has had two or three. The first couple of days are the worst after which we found the pain part improved rapidly. If she's not using ice packs frequently that's another suggestion I would make.

Ginger Ale or Ginger Tea might help. And keep a full stomach if she can. If she is puking then she is going to need fluid and mineral replacement, ASAP. When my wife gets sick, in a day or less, she is at the doctor getting IV fluids since she is dehydrated.

Zofran(sp) or Phenergan(sp) is what my wife has to use when she gets sick. Zofran is really expensive though. The Pharmistist said it was the most expensive drug they stock.

Good Luck.

If the crackers don't work, try to get the doctor to give her a different medicine. Most of the meds that they want to use have about the same properties that hydrocodone does. Try to get the Dr. to give her some 5mg oxycodone. If she is taking 7.5/750 hydrocodone, the 5mg oxy will be about the same strength or if it is stronger it won't be much.

taking them with food can help, even if only a couple crackers. Maybe cut one in half an try that. My wife had her gall bladder done, and had the same side affects, but the above helped her. She felt rotten the first couple days but made great progress after that, and had a full recovery after a couple weeks. I hope your wife has the same luck.

Well, we finally have gotten to the root of the problem.. Some of the meds may have been the problem but my wife actually has an obstructed bile duct what was causing the problem. Our family dr admitted her to the hospital yesterday since she was still having the nausea, vomitting, and pain 5 days post surgery. She was also dehydrated.

An ultra sound revealed the blockage and they are doing a procedure where they go down her throat to the common bile duct to try and remove the blockage. If that doesnt do it they will have to operate again.

The part that im disturbed about is that the surgeon did not explore the bile duct for a blockage while he was in there because the an ultra sound done about 5 yrs ago did not show a blockage. BUT the gall bladder was full of gall stones that did not appear on an ultra sound as well..

Hope your wife gets better. No fun being sick during the holidays. I agree, seems like Dr. would have checked while he was there, but they are only human too, or so I hear.

Humor:

I think it was Bill Cosby who did a skit about Dr's infatuation with holes. He said, what do they do, you go in they want to look in your mouth, ears, up your ****, they run tests, can't find anything wrong. So then what do they do, want to operate (create more holes). Then what do they do for recreation, play golf. What is golf? A game about holes, 18 of them.

It is pretty standard to do a cholangiogram during the surgical procedure to make sure everything is flowing properly. I suspect that it was done (should have been done), but that only tells you that everything is working right then and there. The problem probably developed post operatively.

but they are only human too, or so I hear.

I remember my first day of med school, looking out over my classmates in the auditiorum and my first thought was, you mean these people are going to be doctors! I'm sure they thought the same thing about me. And the truth is that a lot of the real oddballs have turned out to be some of the best doctors and some of the more promising looking folks have turned out to be awful doctors, criminals, deadbeats, etc. Every problem, personality flaw, character flaw or disorder that affect everyone else, also affect doctors.

But even the best of them drop the easy ball in the end zone sometime. Its just that the consequences are often a lot higher.

For relief of the oxycodone-hydrocodone nausea, simply stay in bed.

Standing up and/or moving around is a no-no and will make you ill. Stay off your feet.
