towboat, welcome aboard.I have a 94 1440 and the fill tank is under the seat in the rear.As far as oil I changed mine out with Cub Cadet brand from a dealer.7 qts. @ $5.99,spent around $100 to change ALL the filters and oils.Filters and parts from him has been cheaper in the long run.I like the fact that my dealer will tell me how to diagnosis the small problems I've had.Enjoy your tractor....

Hi towboat:
My OLD Cub Cadet 1450 hydrostatic has a fill plug on the rear plate. It has a square hole that I use a 3/8 socket extension to remove. Cub Cadet likes to sell their Hydrostatic oil to you.but I have been using regular hydraulic oil I buy at autozone or sams (Sam's sell it by 5 gallon pails) it's something like 20 weight.I have been using it for over 20 years now.I change the Hydro oil filter every 3-4 years too.but I only put say 30-60 hours a year on the machine. I think the machine was built in 1979

I have a 70's IH CC 1450 that I recently purchased and it has a very small leak which I believe is hydro stat fluid (it is clear in color). From what I can tell it is leaking around the real plate that you mentioned. I suspect I'll have to open that up someday and see if I can replace the seal.

In the mean time the nice man at TSC gave me a bottle of 20W-50 motor oil (which is not clear). Is it okay to mix this in as needed to keep this full or should I find the clear stuff? Also where is the filter you mention?

Thanks!

the filter is underneath in front of the differential. look up above the back of the deck and you should see it. i've been using all purpose tractor hydraulic fluid. i guess somehow its different from regular hydraulic fluid. alot of people on here use motor oil, but a couple dealers told me not to. for as cheap as tractor hydro fluid is, i dont see any benefits to going to motor oil. also, make sure if you change your filter, use a cc filter. as far as mixing, i never mix any oil aside from residual that hangs out when i change the oil. i wont deliberately mix it.

OK cool. I stopped in at a small engine shop that sells CC's and got two quarts of the oil and a new filter. The oil I bought isn't clear either. I also ordered a gasket. I'm a little learly of replacing that gasket because it seems like a simple fix to me. I hope I don't open that up and find a bigger problem. Still, knowing adds confidence and right now I have no clue what the deal is back there. I guess if I'm removing that old gasket that I better get some more oil when I go pick up the new gasket.

Does anyone know what level is "too low" to safely operate? I think it is best not to add unless I have to until the new filter comes in. The man I purchased it from said if I can stick my finger in there and feel it that I'm golden.

i just fill it till it wont hold anymore. and as far as the gasket, you could use regular liquid gasket maker. iveused it with good effect. your probably going to want to put some on the gasket anyway.
