John I have to ask you, would you have purchased the TN70 in a hydro were it available at the time of your purchase?

Mike I guess it is a financial decision. I am not using it for yard mowing and the type of loader work I do is sporadic and I don't seem to miss it when I am doing it. So I would say it would only be worth maybe $500.00??? And I know I could not get it for that so the answer is no.

The biggest drawback may be that if I ever need to sell it I might hear the dreaded words from some potential buyer "You mean it doesn't have hydro?"

Or if I did have hydro I could hear the dreaded words "You mean it has that sissy hydro stuff on it." /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I hope I'm not changing the subject here, but I do have a question.

There are several differant variations of gear tractors.
Glide shifts, power shifts (shift and reverse without clutch)
Sycro- shuttle, sycronized main gears (shift on the go)
Many of the above transmissions come in 8f/8r, 12f/12r, 16f/16r Etc.

Then the is the straight gear transmission, stop to shift, usually only 2 reverse speeds, shifter on the floor, Etc.

Out of the members that prefer the hydro over gear
How many are comparing to a previously owned straight gear ?

How many are comparing to a previously owned sycro-shuttle/power shift type transmissions.
The reason I ask is because there is a big differance in how the differant gear transmissions work.
Thanks

My first compact was a Deere 855 hydro the main use was for mowing. My lawn is 7 1/2 acres and is in a woods which has been thinned out but still quite a few trees. By the time I got done mowing I could hardly walk from pushing the hydro peddle it killed my knee. Yes it had cruise which is worthless while trying to manuver around trees. Also under heavy loads the hydro peddle would stick after taking foot off peddle. If you was under load with the throttle at 3/4 or more when you pushed the hydro peddle the tractor would lurch forward instead of gradually moving. I started to raise produce a couple of years later and had no interest in staying whith a hydro and went with the Deere 970 which I loved. I had that 3 years and and moved up to a Deere 4600 power reverser which has also been an excellent tractor. (2700+ hours) Oh by the way I put in new lawns now and as you can see I put in a lot of seat time and am getting ready to upgrade to a Deere 4720 hydro and am hoping the new hydros will be a little more forgiving on the knee.

Let's see my left foot rests near the brake, my right foot is on the hydro pedal, my left hand is on the steering wheel, and most of the time my right hand is on the joystick. If it gets any more complicated than that a lot of us hydro owners simply can't handle the extra stress. John says we are a lazy bunch anyway. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I went from a grey market Hinomoto E2304 with a gear trans to a John Deere 855 hydro. I felt that the gear trans tractor was much stronger doing loader work. I got rid of the 855 and went through various grey market tractors, mostly Yanmar, one with a regular gear transmission and to with power shift transmissions. When I went for a new tractor I did not even consider a hydro trans. I went with a shuttle shift gear tractor. I could not be happier. I do wish that Deere offered a glide shift tranny like Kubota has. The GST is similar to Yanmar's power shift.

You shouldn't speak for anyone else but you, cuz based upon the rest of this thread, apparently not.

"My question is has anyone hear ever owned a hydro and decided there next tractor would be a geared tractor because they thought geared tractors were better and did not like the hydro as well ?"

MikePA, If no one responded would that mean no one cared, on one read this post or that no one would switch from HST to Geared?

I am not responding to this post because.....????

....I love my HST

We drive nothing but stick shift vehicles, all three. Only auto car I've ever owned was a 1957 Chrysler. It was cheap. Couldn't afford a VW that I really wanted back then. Fiance hated it. We got rid of it before marrying.

For tractors though, an HST is the way I went. Can't see getting anything else. It does seem to whine and complain more with hydraulic whines and squeals though. A gear tractor would be quieter.

What I can't get used to is not mistaking the joy stick for the old hand clutch like we had on our Allis on the farm. Keep wanting to use it to go forward (and even backwards) instead of those hydro pedals.

My HST 4010 is A WHOLE LOT easier to use that the gear shift on my neighbor's 820 JD.
