You might try some other fluids to see if they will work, but is it really worth it if they don't work the best ?
Deere knows so I trust Deere. Cheaper not worth the risk just for a few bucks, to me.

Does the 400 specify low viscosity hygard? If yes that might be a little harder to find an alternative fluid that meets that spec.

As far as I know JD400 is using the same Sundstrand 15 hydrostatic transmission as my JD300 and JD430 are and both approve use "Type F" automatic transmission fluid as an alternative to John Deere fluid.
I have been using Type F in the JD300 since 1993
