My brand new hypro roller pump makes a growling type noise. Kinda like a car or truck thats low on power steering fluid. When you turn the wheel the growls. This is the same kind of noise. The noise goes away as the engine slows down, but speed it up and it growls like crazy.

Its a directly driven pump, 2600 rpm 4101 4 roller Hypro pump. Silver series. (i do have the engine limited to 2500 to avoid over speeding)

Is it normal to growl, groan, whine or whatever youd call that noise is that it makes (like a low power steering level like mentioned)??

I cant find any air leaks in the suction line anywhere, everything is tight and not leaking. It is pumping from a tank, through 7 feet of hose, and the tank is on a trailer, with the pump on the ground so there is plenty of gravity feeding going on.

Help please!?

Personally, I've only used a 6 roller Hypro pump and, no, it did not make any noise. It was very quiet. It's not a big deal to take one apart to look at the rollers or see if there's anything unusual in there. Is it doing its job right; i.e., pumping whatever liquid you're using?

I'm just pumping water right now and it is pumping great. Lots of pressure and volume. It doesn't seem to be pulsating or anything.

I wonder if it's just that the water isn't much lubrication. Anyway, I don't really think you could go wrong either way; i.e., ignoring the noise and continue using, or take it apart and see what it looks like inside.

I wouldn't think the water would be causing a problem but i'm no expert. It really sounds to me like its somehow sucking air. Its being fed from a 5/8" hose off a tank, maybe that cant supply all the water it needs VIA gravity. IDK.

I just dont want to hurt the pump any. Its about a $300 pump although I didn't pay that much for it.

I really have no idea. I used a 6500 series pump myself and they don't run anything close to the rpm that 4101 is rated for; 540 to 1200. Makes me wonder if that whine is normal for that kind of speed. What kind of engine are you using? I think it's most common for people to use their tractor PTO, so the pump itself is only turning 540 rpm. But I used to have a spray rig (forget who made it) that had a 25 gallon tank, a 3hp Briggs & Stratton engine, the 6500 series Hypro pump, pressure regulator, and 100' hose all mounted on a little cart with 4 wheels. There was a gear reduction "transmission" between the engine and the pump so even with the engine rpm set pretty high, the pump was turning considerably slower.

I'm using a direct drive Honda 5.5 hp speed reduced to 2600rpm.

I haven't seen one like that so I'm afraid I don't have any other answer.

I'm no expert but have used that pump with a 55 gal tank sprayer using insecticide, or 2-4 D herbicide or glycosphate on different occassions. I don't recall any unusal noise. The pump does get louder as the pressure is increased up to the max (less than 150 psi). Since your pump is "new", there shouldn't be any maintenance problem such as corrosion. Several years ago I spoke with the HYPRO technical people and found them quite helpful. Try 1-800-445-8360. The owners manual has a lot of good service and maintenance info. Good luck It sounds like it is starving for fluid flow. Maybe the in line filter is clogged up.

Its got a new filter. The whole setup is new except the motor. What kind of noise does this pump make?

I don't think the pumps normally make any noise at all. Have you done any checking to be sure it's the pump instead of a bearing in the connections to the engine? And now I'm just making wild guesses at possibilities.:D

Okay, from memory.....1. My 3.5 HP engine is running at full throttle.....just normal engine sound with no pressure on the pump. 2. Now that I'm ready to spray up 35 feet, I turn the pressure up to 100 psi. As that happens I can hear the pump doing its work. But I can't recall what that sounds like. Sorry. P.S. I've used this pump (Silvercast Model 4101XL) on my property for 5 years and it works just like new. P.S......your pump should be under warranty in case it is defective.

I've got a 4101-xl hooked to a Honda engine on a 55 gallon sprayer and just this afternoon figured out why mine was growling.

The coupler on mine when the pump is working on all backpressure (the valves closed and not using the hand sprayer so it should be all agitation), looks to be spinning at the pump side every other turn and catching at the other turn. Until I took off the guard sitting in between the motor and pump and really scrutinized what was happening I was not able to figure it out.

I've got the set screws in with medium loc-tite on the coupler and very tight so I have no idea why mine is doing this. I am going to call the Hypro technical support line to see if they have any ideas.

Anyway I thought I would post this in case you may have a similar issue with the growling noise that I have.

Good luck,
Rex

Thats great info. Ill check on that. Thanks for posting!

Not sure if you had any luck on yours but this is what I found out about my similar situation.

It looks like I am getting too much pressure buildup when it is under all backpressure (boom valves closed and gun off). That is why it is working well when the boom valve is on but squealing like a stuck pig when the pressure is not allowed to escape and the coupler is having to provide relief by slipping on the shaft. Not a good situation.

I am going to look at my agitator line and relief line to make sure I don't have any blockages there. Failing that, my pressure regulator could not be opening like it should under the all backpressure condition and I may need to have it inspected/replaced.

I will post my final resolution once I determine what that is so this can be added to the wealth of information on this site in case anybody else if ever looking for 4101xl troubleshooting.
