While I was attaching my brandy new meteor 75" snow blower, I had one hassle after another. I was in the field with the nasty wind and got impatient. Got her all hooked up and tried putting the pto shaft on. Just fit but couldn't get it all the way on...so I decided to get myself in the barn to get out of the cold....lifted my 3pnt and pow bang boom, the pto shaft ripped the pto drive on the tractor in half. Now I have a nice little nub off the back of the tractor!! Yea!! Guess now I need to know how to replace it if any of you have taken that off yet?? Any positive comments??
Thanks
Dumb

A pessimistic little birdy tells me that may very well involve splitting the tractor. There are several Class III members out there with the repair manual, who I am sure will pipe up shortly.

That is a real bummer... /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Patrick, I am so sorry to hear about your mishap. We've all done similar things I'm sure. God knows I have. Just two weeks ago I broke a bomb-proof crane gear by mis-using it. What moves eventually breaks, one way or another. Hang in there, and please don't kick yourself although I know it's tempting.

I'll have a look at my Kubota manual, there might be similarities. I bet $.05 you won't have to split the tractor, hope not anyway.

Good luck, John D.

Well I got off the phone w/ the NH dealer seems it is not to bad of a job. Couple of bolts here and there, a seal, a gasket and a bearing, parts around $150 will have them in a couple of days. I will try and take a couple of photo's for referance in case someone else does the same stupid thing. Let you guys now in a few days when the parts are in and installed

"lifted my 3pnt and pow bang boom, the pto shaft ripped the pto drive on the tractor in half."

Seems something else must be wrong in the setup.. even being half on.. there should not be that much force between the implement's pto shaft.. and the tractor's pto drive.. when the 3pt is lifted.

I would have guessed that the implement's pto shaft would have bent/broken before tractor's pto drive.

Hope it works out.. it would be great to see pictures.. sorry it broke.

Actually, the result is quite typical. That tubing has trremendous strength in compression. As we just learned. PTO shafts for most 3pt impleements need to be checked carefully to make sure they are the proper length. Experience is something you get just after you badly need it.

That's a good observation, I didn't stop to try to figure out how that happened ....

Sounds like maybe a u-joint wasn't in its usual position and didn't swivel, which allowed the shaft to act as a lever against the pto shaft. A real fluke, reason #132 why it could have happened to any of us.

Patrick - hey, that's twice now you've used the word "stupid", which it wasn't. Try doing what I do - I never call myself stupid - I let other people do it for me. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

VERY glad to hear it's not going to be so bad as it might have been. And hazmat, we never shook on it, so you're off the hook. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

RickB,

Although what you said probably makes alot of sense to alot of TBN'ers, I have no idea what you mean by that statement about the PTO shaft for an implement being the right length. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Please forgive my ignorance as I have yet to own let alone install a PTO implement. But I definitely don't want to make the same mistake. So..... are you trying to imply that the connection coupling between implement & PTO drive on Tractor was not made successfully because the implement PTO shaft was not long enough ?? /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Dazed & Confused (It does'nt take much),
