Re: I am in a BBQ grill quandary !!!

Great. Give it a try and lemme know if how it turns out. There's 5 inches of snow on my grill right now and she's busy cookin down a big pot o maple sap lately.

See W_Harv's post above for other ideas. He omits the ice, but I recommend you put some in there, it'll steam a lil and prolly cook a lil faster.

Don't try to hurry that cabbage along, let it cook nice an slow otherwise it won't be done through and through. Sure is yummy and I hope ya give it a run through! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Yep, Harv, the 1015Y is the only onion I wanted in my garden. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif However, in my travels, I found that the Vidalia and Walla Walla onions were at least almost as good. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif I eat quite a bit of onions, and my wife eats lots of onions, but our nearest neighbor on the farm has to be the all time record holder onion eater; he doesn't eat any meal of any kind; breakfast, lunch, or dinner, without having slices of onion to go with it. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Re: I am in a BBQ grill quandary !!!

Harv, I remember 10 or 15 years, those big vadalia georgia onions ocassionally, very ocassionally made there way up north here. There would be a stampede for them like they were clouds droppin cash. People would and did pay anything for them.

Now, they are everywhere, but I'm sure they are mass produced 'cause they don't seem to taste like the ones I remember long time ago. Then again what does. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Can't say that I know what a 10-15 is or ever ate one. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: I am in a BBQ grill quandary !!!

Bird, we shoulda started an onion thread! Anyway, here's an interesting tid-bit.

About 5 miles from my home, in the Hudson Valley is a lil town called Chester. Chester is famouse for one thing....onions. It is said that this lil ol farming community produces about 1/8 of the nations onions. I can't prove that but is sure looks feasible.

In the early 1800s, an large exodus of Polish immigrants settled in this town. There was a large lake (1000s of acres) that they decided to drain and tile for growing. This they did and the resultant crop was onions. The soil, now infamous in these parts, is black as pitch and you can see wood pallets of onion stock boxes in all directions lining the horizon. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

They claim the 1015Y was the parent of the Vidalias. You may not want to read all of it, but here's a pretty good history of the sweet onion.

Re: I am in a BBQ grill quandary !!!

Bird, I bet DAP probably never heard of a Noonday onion either. They are my personal favorites. Then 1015s, then Vidalias. Isn't it almost time to head off to the Noonday Onion Festival?

Re: I am in a BBQ grill quandary !!!

Steve, I've never been to that festival either (second Saturday of June), and of course the Noonday onions have to be grown in a 10 mile area around Noonday, according to what I've read, but I'm not sure just what they are; a separate variety or something like the 1015Y, just grown in that area.

Harv,

( When I'm done I want to have ALL the advantages of a traditional smoker--cooker. I also want to incorporate a propane system for those evenings when I come home tail tucked firmly between legs and my wife is too pooped to pop up supper )

That's what I mean. You can't beat the gas for convenience on those tired nights, but when I've got the time I'd rather do it right with the smoker/cooker. I've seen some nice combo setups. There's a nice one at a nearby Bass-Pro shop that's mounted on a small utility trailer, but it goes for about $2600. It isn't stainless. I think I can put together a pretty nice system for a fair bit less than that.

Re: I am in a BBQ grill quandary !!!

Bird,

They say everything is bigger in Texas. Well in that Aggie link that you posted, it appears even 'two' is bigger in Texas. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

( The two types of Bermuda onions generally grown in Texas were the Yellow Bermuda and White Bermuda and Crystal Wax.

They may play some good football, but it seems they don't count so well? /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Re: I am in a BBQ grill quandary !!!

Larry, I take it you don't know a lot about Texas, or you'd know about Aggies. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif I think the Aggies are the butt of most of the jokes in the state. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
