I am in a BBQ grill quandary !!!

I have the urge to replace my grill / grills, and there are certainly a ALOT to choose from.
I have Never purchased a new grill or Any grill for that fact. Every grill I have ever had, has been a hand me down from one of my homeowners. Usually Weber, Charbroil or Ducane etc. Most all of these grills are like new and still have Oodles and Oodles of life left in them.
Unfortunately it has been several years since any of my homeowners has updated their grills and the two grills that I presently have are starting to give out. I use my grills ALOT, all year long.
I could easily get another summer out of them both but I have the urge to replace at least one of them with something toward the middle / upper end of the BBQ quality range.
As much as I would love to go plunk $1000 bucks down on the ultimate stainless grill, thats not going to happen. For the right grill I will go up to the $500 +/- range. I know that there are Plenty of Good "Propane" grills available in that range.
Any suggestions ?

Re: I am in a BBQ grill quandary !!!

Mark, I don't consider myself an expert in any way about gas grills. I have been very happy with my Weber that I bought 4 years ago. It was the cheapest model, about $350 at that time, and has been problem free. It is not very big, with two burners, but that was all the two of us needed.

Re: I am in a BBQ grill quandary !!!

I'm going to watch this thread closely Mark as I hope to replace my aging grill this season too. I found a great grilling site but couldn't tell you what it is now. There were good comments about the Members Mark grills from Sams Club (maybe search on Members Mark Grill). I see Home Depot carries Vermont Castings now and Lowes has some nice stainless models too. If I have a chance to dig up that other site I'll post it but I don't doubt the TBN membership will come through too /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: I am in a BBQ grill quandary !!!

I will expand my original post with one further question.
How many of you Really use the side burner on your grills.
I have had my 2nd hand Charbroil for about 3 years now and I think I have used the side burner once !
Is a side burner a worth while thing to have "just in case" or is it a waste of space and money ?

Re: I am in a BBQ grill quandary !!!

Mark, don't know if they are available in your area or not, but look into Holland Grills. I have 2 that are close to 10 years old and are still going strong.

Holland Grills were invented in Apex, NC and carry a lifetime warranty. The only time I needed to use the warranty was to get a new orifix. Apparently the one that came with mine was for natural gas and I use propane.

A while back there was some discussions on CountryByNet about grills. Might try searching over there.

Re: I am in a BBQ grill quandary !!!

I saw one at Lowe's in Manchester CT this past weekend that was $600 and had a Lifetime (99 year) warranty on the burner. The burners were made of brass. It did have a side burner also. The rest of the grille had some long term warranty also, but I didn't pay much attention to it. It was a Stainless Steel unit and it was quite heavy. I am not impressed by stainless steel, so it didn't appeal to me. I prefer cast aluminum that I can spray black when it needs it and put a replacement burner in every five years for $35 and keep going. I figure I won't live for 99 more years, so I don't need one of these high end grilles. Besides, who know how long Lowe's or the manufacturer is going to be around. I can remember when no one heard of Walmart and Sears was the giant retailer and Woolworth's was the big discount store. In fact, I am so old, that I think that I remember the stock market crash of 1929, or so it seems. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Re: I am in a BBQ grill quandary !!!

I agree with you. Weber grills are first rate.
I just stumbled upon the Charbroil Terrace. They sure sound and look like a nice grill for the money.
Charbroil Terrace series

3 burner @ 40,000 BTU with side burner for $399

I actually prefer a grill with a flat top cover, it makes a great warming rack for plates and many other things.

Re: I am in a BBQ grill quandary !!!

My sister has one of These and absolutely loves it. I know you brought up propane, but I thought I'd put this up anyway /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I've read about them and seems those that have them absolutely love them. Me? I have a regular & very old propane myself.

She bought the middle sized (she lives in Atlanta) at their store where someone traded it in. She paid like .25 on the dollar, or somehow got a really spiffy deal /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

*disclaimer, I've never used one myself, just read up on them

Re: I am in a BBQ grill quandary !!!

It's a little early for a valid evaluation, but 9 days ago, I bought a CharBroil Big Easy (3 burners with the 4th burner on the side), both grill and griddle, at The Home Depot for $259 plus tax plus about a 20 dollar cover and a $10 cast iron "smoke box". I think we're going to like it. I did a brisket over a pan of water on the right side with just the left burner lit one day last week (didn't have the smoke box then so didn't get quite the flavor I wanted, but not bad), then just did burgers Saturday.
