You just can't beat moosemeat. So sweet and tender. The only thing I ever made with caribou was jerky.

When my parents and 2 younger brothers all lived in Anchorage, the did quite a bit of hunting and fishing. And the first time I visited up there, my brother gave me a stick of baloney made from caribou; best baloney I ever ate. And as you said, moose was very good steaks and roasts.

t's interesting that prices are also regional. We moved this past year from North Jersey to Central Pennsylvania (about 200 miles). Food in general here is more exxpensive. In NJ I used to stock up on hot dogs (Oscar Mayer or Nathens or HN) when they went on sale for $198 a pkg and freeze them. I'd buy London bRoil at $1.99/lb and grind it for ground beef and freeze it. Here everything is more (except chicken). GB usually $4/lb, steaks all start at $7 for the cheap stuff.

And they have regional foods like Lebanon Baloney and Ring Bologna. And Hag Maw. And Chicken Pot Pie is a chicken stew with wide flat noodles/dumplings. And there isn't an Italian restaurant around (excepting Olive Garden and the pizza shop).

Most of my friends that hunt caribou, all have it processed in to hotdogs or meat sticks. Most excellent!

It's those four legged animals running around out back that the goberment owns, that = venison!

I do like to add a little ground pork to it though...

They make it up with $10/lb. ribeyes.

It's $4.99 a pound for boneless whole ribeye this week. That's usually around a 20 pound cut of meat. They'll slice it any way you want. We got it for $3.49 a pound last month. Had them slice it 1" thick. Got about 22 steaks out of ours. Had 3 on the grill last night... :licking:

Man, that is cheep! That's almost what they sell for per pound on the hoof.

It's way cheaper once you figure in processing per pound.

This place is something. It's a small, 4 isle grocery store. The butcher counter takes up the entire back wall, probably 40'. There's easily 8-9 butchers in there and another 10 counter people. Take a number. You'll be lucky if there's only 25 people in front of you! We've been there with as many as 40 in front of us. Worth the wait.

Last time we were there, we bought the whole ribeye, about 20 pounds, 20 pounds of bacon, 20 pounds of split chicken breasts, 10 pounds of tilapia, 10 pounds of riblets (man, they were good!), and 10 pounds of chicken wings. We take everything home and vacuum pack it all in 2 person and single servings, then rotate it in the freezer with anything that's left. Almost all we ever buy at the grocery store is veggies, cheese, milk and eggs.... and beer.

I let my neighbor hunt deer on my property. Every so often he gives us deer bologna and hunter sticks. Man, those are good. Ground venison makes some great chili and tacos, too!

Food is expensive in Maine. But my taxes are $700 a year for my house on 26 acres. Most people can’t say that.
