I'm moving to Indiana!!!!

That place is in Buchanan, Michigan, just across the border from Indiana. It's about 15 minutes from South Bend.

In all seriousness, soutwest Lower Michigan is a pretty decent area. Lots of rural. Orchards and vinyards. Lakes. Lake Michigan. 90 minutes to Chicago. I could pick a worse place to live, that's for sure.

Food is expensive in Maine. But my taxes are $700 a year for my house on 26 acres. Most people can’t say that.

Our house taxes are about $550 for a house on 1 acre, and about $500 for 20 acres of unimproved land we own about 9 miles from here. However, if we built a new house on that 20 acres, taxes would be several thousand at least.

Taxes on lakefront properties is outrageous around here.

We saw a literal SHACK in the dunes about 3 blocks from Lake Michigan. I thought the ad said it was $15,000. Great deal. Oh. Wait. That was the annual property tax! The shack was appraised at $450,000. It was in worse condition than my 2 car garage!

Anyone remember having to turn the crank on the meat grinder to make hamburger and then to stuff the sausage casings which had just been cleaned out?

And I can also remember when one of the reasons I ate so much shrimp was because it was so cheap. That sure has changed.

It's $4.99 a pound for boneless whole ribeye this week. That's usually around a 20 pound cut of meat. They'll slice it any way you want. We got it for $3.49 a pound last month. Had them slice it 1" thick. Got about 22 steaks out of ours. Had 3 on the grill last night... :licking:
I haven't seen anything less than $10/lb. around here in almost 2 years. Top sirloin seems to be in good supply and occasionally goes on sale for around $5/lb. My wife prefers that anyway so we compromise and do what she wants.

I dont know how young people with families can afford to buy groceries these days, for just my wife and myself we spend around
$200 a week for groceries and its's mostly just dairy products, vegetables, drinks, and breads were getting. I raise my own beef and get seafood and everything else from local markets, pet food at the feed store and bulk items like soap and paper products from Costco.

I'm interested. Is it truly cheaper to raise your own beef, if you add up all the feed and care they need?

Well, you made me curious, so I just checked what we've spent so far this year, and it's a little less than $100 a week, and we do not raise any of our groceries anymore.

Probably not if you're just doing it for yourself unless you live in an area where you have a long growing season or a source of cheap feed.
I finish about a dozen animals a year and sell most of them so my beef ends up being free, although now that I've gotten used to my beef I would still keep raising my own even if it cost me as much as buying it from the market because my beef has me spoiled. I raise all natural Black Angus that is prime grade beef and have it dry aged at my processor, you won't find much beef around that taste this good.
