No matter how specific I am in my searches always come up with items totally unrelated.
Looked on ebay today for "pump motor start switch" came up with auto starters and wanting to know what vehicle! ???
Also checked "water pump motor start switch" , same thing.
It seems to be on most online stores.
On Lowe's I was looking for "laminate flooring" it comes up with flooring and also patio furniture.
I guess the basement dwelling programmers don't know the difference!

Or, time has marched on and there are now so many products/objects/things on the intertubes that your search needs to be more specific.

I've learnt to research the product first, especially as what you may know as a 'dohicky' is actually a 'thingamabob'. For example; North America = "J-Cloth", here in Aus/NZ = "CHUX". It's the exact same thing.

I've also found that, once I've found/defined what I want, I can get it for less from the source as opposed to eBay. This year, eBay's cut of the the final sales price is 10%.

Database queries are as efficient as their owners want them to be...
By searching for something they already know you are in the market to purchase a particular product etc...
...Why not take the opportunity to show you something else that their research say you might also be interested in?

Not saying all databases are that devious...they may just have had lazy programmers...!

could you be looking for

a pressure switch for a well?

or a float switch, or square D float switch

because I have no idea what you mean by a ""pump motor start switch",, I would think by that statement it would be a "start switch for a single phase motor that runs a pump, that is internal in the motor that kicks it from the start windings to the run windings,

and if you really want to see a messed up search page try Home depots,

Do you put your search string in quotes? That sometimes minimizes the extraneous stuff.

When my daughter was doing vet science one assignment was determining the *** of a foal before birth, she made the mistake of putting in ***/horses and got several hundred pages in return none of which were veterinary related......

I had to click on this just to make sure that I wasn't the OP. Earlier tonight I searched for "Maine Motorist killed by rock", and may as well have asked if the moon is green cheese.

Actually the latter produced pretty boring results.

Anyone remember when "search engines" did not have politically motivated agendas???
If you do you are remembering using a beta version...!

The Internet is all commerce driven.

And nothing generally speaking for the "Individual". It's all about marketing in broad strokes.

If you searched for a factory pink Kubota tractor, some piece of sheit website would come back saying "find factory pink kubota tractors at POS.com, just to get you to come to their site. Irritating!

I would only give your first statement in the cited post a 40% thumbs up...I would say that the Internet is primarily "information driven"...The value of that information is to be discerned by the user...

IMO..the more of said information that is commerce driven/financed...the more it should be scrutinized...

It's certainly finance driven. How could you argue otherwise? No money or potential for some = no internet.

This site certainly does not exist because some farts like to discuss flail mowers. Someone is making money somewhere.

No, you are just old :)

I just googled your thread title and guess what was at the top of the list?

Well obviously it costs money to maintain a web presence...monetizing a web site either by sponsors or strictly donations is a no brainer to curb expenses...

"finance driven" is not a good description of the entire Internet...I'd say only about 40% of the net is there just to make money off user traffic regardless of the content provided...

There has always been just three things that generate Internet traffic...and they are: content, content and content...!

it is "traffic" that sets the value of web sites...not necessarily the content...but it's the content that drives the traffic...

Years ago, I heard that if not for ****, the Internet would not exist! Curious if that is true.

I'm sorry to say, that I don't much pay attention to the advertisers on this site. BUT, if it's only advertiser was a high end custom electric tractor manufacturer, it would never fly. It's the very generic tractor dealers and related implement dealers that (and I am only guessing) pay the bills.

It was born and has never stopped expanding in both technology and volume since it's establishment...
it was growing at exponential proportions before the average consumer even dreamed of having a home personal computer...let alone the elapsed time it took for the development of GUI's and the technology to encode, transfer (upload/download) re-encode and display graphics except for pixel matrixed, monochrome images...

IMO a good majority of the revenues generated on the Internet are from entities that you do not even know exist...they are generated by companies that put their data collection/mining scripts (software) on the most popular web sites...

FWIW... social media and news sites are the worst for making money off user naivety...

You MUST be right /pine. Most times I use a search engine - I get the most unrelated advertising...........

This is probably not the answer you're looking for but, if you want a search engine that doesn't track your queries, I'd recommend:

DuckDuckGo

Different people want to be viewed. The do crap like print likely loosely related search terms the same color as the back ground. You can't see blue on blue but the browser can.

DuckDuckGo

While it will not free you from the unscrupulous Internet it helps.
Be aware though that every site you visit will track you and force feed you false results in subsequent searches. I've even had sites visited with DDG show up in my Google history.
