We just planted four rose bushes last night, which is a first time thing for us. We know nothing about growing roses, other than the fact that some people's roses sure look nice! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Even though there are probably numerous opinions on the internet and in various books, I though it would make for a good discussion topic here, and we will learn from all of you folks on the proper care of roses. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

First question-- We bought these at the local garden center, but they sat in the plastic pots for about a week before we had a chance to plant them in the ground. The leaves on one of them turned purple. Is this normal?

When I was a kid my dad raised roses, he didn't believe in mulch. So he had a garden area devoted to roses and surrounding them was dirt. It was my job to weed around the thorny plants every week. And I pruned them in the fall, and covered them every winter. Each spring I would begin the cycle again. Spraying for aphids, hand picking pests, etc.

The I grew up and got a tractor with a FEL and a toothbar. Now when I see a rose bush I just dig it right up with the toothbar and lay it on top of the lawn. Then I go over it with the mower deck and chop it into mulch.

The rain? No that is not THE reason, that is just one of many!!! I do like the way roses look. They smell like a funeral home, but they do look pretty. . . as long as they arrive at the front door in a vase and I don't have to tend to them.
