hate to start a war but hope you get stopped the first time out trying to hall a 9900# machine and a trailer with a vehicle rated for 10500# even though it has brakes you are going to be 12000#or more. That is not right or safe just because you have a heavy trailer with brakes . the laws for towing were put in place because of people doing things just like that and then getting hurt or worse yet hurting someone else. makes it so much harder on those of us who try and be legal and safe.

That's not a "war" statement. If this poster is going down the road with his van and his TLB and trailer in tow and he has to make an abrupt stop to avoid an accident or pedestrian, well......... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

People in general take really stupid chances with their lives and the lives of others and attorneys get rich. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You are right the van is underated to pull my new tractor. I also need to look into getting a commercial drivers licence. And the trailer is a little lite in capacity for this tractor. David.

What would be the proper size vehicle and trailer to tow this tractor, and a fiew attachments ? What would be the trailer rating ? And what kind of licencing and endorcements? I thought a small dump truck would be useful. thanks David.

David,
i tow my B300 on a 14,000 lb. dual axle trailer behind a dually 1 ton. i consider this a bare minimum. i would like to be able to use a dump truck to tow it and may in the near future. i have 2 duallies and the old ford didn't have enough power to tow it.(it is from the pre power stroke years) it seems to do well behind the chevy. i keep up the maintenance on the brakes for the truck and the trailer. so far it is stopping and pulling better than i expected. if i was towing daily i would definitly go with a bigger truck. i had to find a comprimise between a daily driver and tow vehicle. it has worked well so far. i would also suggest a gooseneck trailer to help put the load further forward if you go the 1 ton route.
good luck,
metin

David:

Personally, I'd go get an SBA loan and buy a tri-axle diesel dump truck with a 30 yard aluminum dump box. Get a 3208 Cat vocational motor, 18 speed LL trans and a tandem axle dual tire drive on drive off equipment trailer like an Eager Beaver with air over hydraulic brakes. You'll need a pintle setup on the back for the trailer. There are lots of good buys in the used dump market and your wife could get a lot of groceries in the dump box. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You bought the machine, now buy the rest of it. With that type of equipment you'd better have serious motive power. Your little Safari van can't stand the strain, neither driveline, brake or frame wise. Going straight down the road and not dealing with any hills, stopsigns or ignorant drivers you might get away with hauling your TLB to grandma's house, but, any abrupt manuvers and your TLB will be driving your little Safari, literally.

Of course, you will have to go the Secretary of State and get your class B CDL and your air brake endorsement. A CDL is nothing other than a test. It's not called a "Certified Dummies License" for nothing. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

My van isn't a safari mid size van. It is a one ton cargo van GMC savana. With a !0,500 lb rating for towing. I know this is still too lite. I am presently in the Air Force. I have been on medical orders for a few years. When they release me I should get a disability rating. Maby I can get some help from the VA to get a Dump truck. I perfer an automatic. Are the transmissions dependable in dump trucks. David.

David:

Love the Fed. My wife does.

I don't know if the VA can help, they have trouble just filling prescriptions.

Get a Allison automatic.

We will leave it at that.

I would love to know what all you paid for this IR.
F250 and 350 are rated at 12500lbs towing, buy a chevy 3500 duelly 4X4 and a 6 ton trailer. Dont know exact chevy towing, but I hear its more then ford. I am guessing the same chevy could pull a 7 ton fully loaded.
Am I right ?
Good luck with that IR, sell it to me asap.

BTW, I agree with the lawful people of the bunch, and would say stopping it is what its all about. Consider a yugo can tow up to 10,000lbs all by itself, but then what ! or How about the leaning on a boat theory, if you lean on a big boat long enough, it'l start to move away from the dock, so you hope the rope will hold it.
web page I made just for this subject.
