In harder soils, after disking, it's used to break up clods.
In softer soils, it's used to compress the soil to firm it up.
They can also be used after seeding small seeds to firmly press them into contact with the soil.

The finish leaves grooves in the surface that help prevent runoff and erosion

One more: In rocky soil it is used to push in the rocks the size of baseballs or less to get a nice flat surface. That is done here after discing and dragging.

I hate to sound dumb here, but since there is no such thing as a dumb question...here goes.

What is the purpose and use of a cultipacker?

One other thing they do is firm the soil with the little V's in the field and these help prevent erosion of the soil and seed after initial seeding. Maximum seed germination can only be achieved with a cultipacker. Ken Sweet

LOL!
I wouldn't have thought of that one.
I'm in Eastern NC.
I'd have to drive 100 miles West to find a rock!!!

Cultipackers are a pretty big deal when seeding. One of the major seed distributors for wildlife foodplots called me 3 years ago and the owner said they would not guarantee seed germination without the use of a cultipacker following seeding. They have been referring their customers to us for used cultipackers for a long time. Ken Sweet

OK your making me feel better on using it before a rebuild...... I was pulling at 5mph or less and I doubt you could hear mine from a half mile away. ;o}

Based on using an old worn out one I would say Grease IT and Go. :D

You get it all tight and then hit something hard you will get to brush up on your cast iron welding skills.

These new look like they are missing one roller is my take. Rebuild the boxing when you have time for non productive activities and pull it at less than 20 MPH in the mean time. :)

6 MPH is the speed we used a worn out one that I think we must to have used over 500 acres over time. I could hear Dad a half mile away coming down the shoulder of the road. :D
