Don't get to misty eyes about the past guys as Dickens' wrote,"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times".

We're all sitting here on computers, with nice tractors, etc. This is the world mankind wants, if it wasn't it would be different. If you want to go back to the past, shut off your electricity, with all the conveniences like your fridge, washing machine, TV with Monday night football, your oil burner that keeps your house warm and all the rest of it and tell me how long you want to go on living that way. While you're at it throw away penicillin.

There were some nice things about the past but there was a lot of terrible stuff too! I remember people getting cancer from cleaning parts with benzene because no one knew any better, what part of that do you want to go back to? How about ten year old kids working in sweat shops? Bread lines, Polio?

my two cents,

Rob

 Good one Rob, might as well go back to the stone wheel too while we're about it ;-)
I was talking to an older gentlemen a few weeks ago, he's close 90, and still
remembers farmers around here using steel wheels and some didn't want to
go to rubber tires.

What a great old picture, I'll be using it on my desktop for a while!

Nice age.
If you were 2 in '39, than you might be past the 70 marker. :D

Beenthere: Look again... it says MINUS 2. :)

Rob: I didn't say I WANTED to go back and cut oak with an axe, nor did I claim that life was better or easier then. I like my pills and my A/C and my labor-saving devices. But I still miss that old farmer, who taught me more about real life than anyone, and that's what got me going. I'm guessing most of us knew a man like that when we were kids.

Grateful11: As for chain saws "coming onto the scene" in the 40's and 50's", yes, they were, and at that time they weighed 40-50 lb and cost about as much as my Granddad made in a year. 3-D printers are coming onto the scene right now that allow you to have a CNC machinist make exact replacement parts for old tractors, too. Jay Leno痴 3D Printer Makes Old Car Parts - NextEngine 3D scanner and Dimension 3D printer - Popular Mechanics Note the cost (plus the cost to have the actual CNC work done). How many of us own one at the moment? :D

Picker,
We all miss our loved ones and those special people but if they lived today they would be doing things like us.
The world didn't lose hard working honest folks like our grandparents, hopefully many of us will be remembered like they were.

There's something about a tractor, it stands there and means business, it's the icon of rural life that defines independence. A link to the earth that our grandparents had, most people move to fast to see the importance of that link.

I like to think those of us here who love what our tractors can do are our grandparents.

Yes, she was, it runs in the family--I'm quite a handsome guy myself.

It occurs to me I should apologize to Clemsonfor and others for hijacking this thread with all this nostalgia stuff. I'm nearing 70 and sometimes get to thinking about the good 'ol days and get carried away. It's a malady that comes on you at my age, I guess. :)

No problem to me, its not my tread i have just been posting in it. I like your pics and have been having fun seeing them.

For some reason i thought i was reading the thread "I miss this" in rural living. Sorry this is my thread!

I need to correct myself. A member PM'd me that Granddad's new tractor was a Farmall A, not a "C" as I first identified it, and he is correct. Thanks, Ike.

Here's another photo of it, takin' care of business, complete with a full coat of Oklahoma dust and dirt. The control handles for the remotes are sticking up to Grandad's left, and the control valve is driving.

Thats not what i meant but i just thought since no one uses new ones they did not make them, maybe from some gov. intervention. Some idiot can get his arm cut off trying to pull a lodged stick from uner his bushhog before cutting it off, but man!

That's why people are supposed to take responsibility for their own action. Personally I don't need the government to look out for me. I look out for myself.
