I think you may find the grapple may be the best thing since sliced bread. I find a new use for mine, most every time I use it.

Now some of TBN'ers will get a good laugh out of this, but for an old man, it may mean if you do something or not.

Since I expected this to be a big job, I wanted to get the cable as high as possible, for more leverage. I have a long, HEAVY, extension ladder, which hasn't had a pull up rope on it in years, because it didn't work well. Also I didn't want to man handle it, (with all my aches & pains), so I layed it on the ground, stretched it out, picked it up with the grapple & planted it against the tree.

I can't see your cable but remember with those saddle clamps to keep the saddle on the live line and the u-bolt on the dead or loose end. "Never saddle a dead horse" /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I'm about to make my own pulling cable, and thought I would check here first for any tips. I'm glad that I did! It makes perfect sense not to compress the working end of the cable. I will be sure to install my clamps in the right direction.

The photos posted show (at least) two saddle clamps on the cable end. Is it best to use two (or more) clamps on the end of the cable?

If you lay a big log next to the tree and pull it over onto the log it will lever the stump right out of the ground with the weight of the tree. Wet oak is 80 pounds per cubic foot.

I pull trees in a ploughing gear, 6,5 km/h. I first make the crown swing one or two times, (pulling till wheelspin, press the clutch and let the tree pull you back, start pulling again when the tree is at its dead point of the swing)
I pulled 16 to 18 inch oaks this way.
