I don't have to take the heat anymore

As Jagmandave said, "San Diego is good!"

Contrary to what Whynot said, you do not want to be anywhere close to Washington, D.C. in August (unless you want to be there when the politicians are not, because they all leave during August). D.C. redefines "humidity" during August.

The best I know in August, or February: Moorea, French Polynesia. Reserved a dive boat for noon to dive the lagoon looking for lionfish. Got to the boat and asked the divemaster, "What's the temperature?" He did the finger-in-mouth, hold-it-up trick and said, "Oh, about 85." I said, "No." and pointed to the water. He said, "Oh, about 85." Again I said, "No." and "Down there.", meaning at the bottom of the lagoon at 60-80 feet. And he said ... "Oh, about 85." He was right.

Northern Wisconsin. Cheap, no crowds, nice weather. If you like the outdoors, then you will like it too.
Bob

I couldn't agree more. Lots of lake cabins to rent between Superior and Ashland. If it does get hot, go sit in Lake Superior -- it has a "mean" temperature of about 36 degrees! Great fishing. Great food. Great people. Here's a good website to start with:

Jagmandave, California is nice but don't they have a different exchange rate?:D

BBTX- Colorado, Rocky Mountains ahh I can fell the cool air already.

DocBob- You named the words that get my attention: no crowds, nice weather, cheap, outdoors.

Eddie Walker, HMMM, Badlands, Devils tower etc... Are you sure this is not a retaliation for that thread I sneaked a snake on you. TWICE!

Just kidding (see attachment). :D
There is no attachment, just kidding.:D Would you have opened it????:D
Your suggestions sound very interesting and fun. I like an active cool vacation that is rich in history.

Whynot, Atlantic city and Washington DC are very interesting but I think I would rather go hiking in the Poconos. I'm still burned out on big city everything after escaping Houston.

Dieselsmoke, The Smokies, the Appalachian trail, very nice. At one time I wanted to do the Appalachian trail when I retired, now a cool 10 mile one day hike sounds about right.

Harvey, mountains, any mountain with cool air sound's good. I thought you were an original. does this mean that you are a copy.:D

Dancer, French Polynesia 85 degrees. That is about 20 degrees cooler than here now!

Knutem, water at 36 degrees just sounds painful. The one think I do like about Texas is the warm water. The cabins sound cool.

I'm feeling cooler already just reading these post. I will print them out and save them. Are there any TBNers in Washington State?

Don, I lived in WA for a while. It is as nice as it gets. Green mountains, uncrowded trout streams, nice weather. I have a summer long vacation planned there for my 50th birthday. Only bad thing is the 2000 miles to get there. 2009. I hate to say it, but I can't wait.

South Africa, Zambia or Namibia.

They're in the southern hemisphere, so our summer is their winter. What better way to extend the hunting season!?!?!

So is coastal Massachusetts.

Actually if you are coming to NE- best to be on the ocean, it can get mean hot & humid here in July & August. I enjoy the cooler temperatures on the boat as much as the sailing.

If your budget allows, Martha's Vinyard, Nantucket & Block Island & the cape all beat the heat. Acadia National Park in ME is fantastic - lots of camping options which keeps the cost under control.

Be sure you bring a dog so he can run on the beach or keep watch while you kayak.

EDIT here - forgot to tell my block island story... A few years back we were cruising south towards CT. Stayed over at Block Island - 75 degrees and sunny. As we sailed into Mystic - it kept getting hotter & hotter. At 7pm that night it was still north of 100 degrees on shore!

Also everyone in New England can thank me for dispensing with the nasty hot spell we had a couple weeks back. I spent large sums of money on central air conditioning - got it up and running on the 100 degree day. After that I think I've had it on 2-3 times mostly to take some humidity out of the air. Kind of like when you buy that new snowblower & it doesn't snow.

Dancer, Come on now it's not that bad:) We have the same weather inland as Washington D.C. and it's bearable, but then again I guess it is the you get used to it deal since summer on the east coast = humidity.

Doc_bob, It may be $$$$$ but, sometimes it is worth it to have one of those Irish/Russian college bar maid's serve you a cold one;)
