I don\'t know what I\'m missin\'

Hi,

I posted questions in a previous thread<font color=blue>
<A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.tractorbynet.com/cgi-bin/compact/showthreaded.pl?Cat=&Board=implement&Number=198120&Search=true&Forum=All_Forums&Words=macher&Match=Username&Searchpage=0&Limit=25&Old=allposts&Main=191074>here</A> </font color=blue>addressing what I needed in a box blade.

I knew nothing about using a box blade...I wanted the best I could get while still staying reasonable in price. I FINALLY decided on a Woods HB60. Price delivered was $705 and I told the dealer to order it last Friday. I really wanted to buy a Frist Choice but hard as I tried, I could not make that happen from my end.

I get a call back from the dealer. Woods has none on the shelf, and it will be two to three weeks before he can have one. He will try to find one in a distrubutor somewhere. Tuesday he still has no answer on the specifics as to delivery of one, so I decide to use my ace in the hole ...hope that means what I think, I'm no poker player /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif...and take Ed King on up on his kind offer to meet and pick up a King Kutter 60 inch box with his pick up truck.

Hey, the truck was there and TSC had a bunch of KK stuff waiting to go home with someone...so I also got a 72 inch rear blade, a boom pole and a sub soiler /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif/w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif...all for less than the Woods box blade would have cost.

But I am straying from what I wanted to say.../w3tcompact/icons/tongue.gif

The decision to go with the KK box was not driven by trying to save a buck. It was driven by NEED to get some work done. I was at the point where I would need to stop what I was doing if I did not have a box blade to continue with.

So I got the KK Box, agreed that the finish is not the greatest, and so on, and went to try it out. IT ACTUALLY WORKED! After reading all the comments about cheap box blades...yes I did search and read a LOT of archived stuff...I am surprised that this KK box blade does as well as it does.

I should report that rain softened up the hard stuff, and I was able to get just about everything done with my loader/toothbar in the place I figured I would need the box blade or never be able to finish. So I am not giving it the kind of test under which an armor-plated box might shine...BUT from what I see so far...this cheap box works pretty well. Works really well, from the perspective of a guy who used to be a pick, shovel and wheelborrow guy.

Ignorance is bliss...I guess I should count my blessings...and be happy not knowing what I might be missing by not having that Woods or Monroe-tuffline box blade.

Just wanted to point out to others that might be in the position that I was...who might write off a cheap box as totally inferior and useless, or almost so...that these cheaper units are tools that may just work fine for your needs. Looks like this one has for me so far...no telling if I will damage it in the future, but so far I have hit some rocks and caught a couple roots stopping the tractor, with no ill affects.

Just another data point that may be of interest to anyone who finds themselves in a position similar to mine.

Thanks again to Ed King for helping out a TBN brother!

Re: I don\'t know what I\'m missin\'

I got a 6' KK box blade, works fine even on the JD SSL
which is 65 HP and 7500#.
Only problem was bent one of the lower pins while
pushing dirt like a dozer.
I also put hooks on back outside corners to pull 2
8' spring tooth drags behind it.

Re: I don\'t know what I\'m missin\'

Hi Bill,

Congratulations on your purchase. I don't think you're missing anything. I have a Woods HB60, but it took Woods a long time to get it to me.

The first one they sent the dealer was an HB65...the invoice said HB60, but the actual boxblade was an HB65. I would have taken it, but I've already made all the gate openings on our property sufficient width to pass 60" implements and the HB65 wouldn't allow any margin for error.

The next unit they sent was a GB60. Now they had the width right, but the wrong series. The dealer refused delivery on this one. He said the Woods truck driver was a bit p.o.'d, but that wasn't our problem. Again, his invoices were showing an HB60.

Finally, I got my HB60, but there was quite a span of time since the original order, maybe 4-6 weeks or so. Fortunately, I didn't need it, so I really didn't mind.

Woods, although they apparently make real nice stuff, seem to have trouble with numbers and the alphabet. My dealer was very apologetic and gave me a pretty good price on the BB ($640 or so, delivered, if memory serves correctly).

If I was in your position, I would have done the same thing. I just like my dealer and wish to send him as much business as possible. But, if I really needed my BB, I would've been pretty upset with Woods on this.

Enjoy all your new tools. Each one is another opportunity for more seat time.

Rick,

Your tale of delays in getting your Woods box scraper is just what I was afraid might happen...glad to hear your story as it makes me feel better about my decision not to wait for Woods to come through.

So far I am finding the KK stuff to be satisfactory, even if the paint is on the shoddy side...
