Not anymore take a look around at how many higher hp tractors are used to do lighter work like, haying, mowing, and loader work.

I'm not saying all of them only get used twice a year (planting/harvesting) but most of them are only consitently used at these times because they use 8-10 gallons of fuel per *** so you really want to use them as little as possible. Aside from that one reason they may be used for the lighter work is because it may be the only machine with an air conditioned cab.

Maybe if they are 20 years old or older, and or a bend-in-the-middle. Other than that too much$$$$ sitting in this day and age to be profitable.

Why didn't you just edit your post and delete it instead of writing a response immediately after?

Just hit the edit button at the bottom of your post box. From there you can change or delete the post as you see fit. Sometimes these places don't come with clear instructions on how to operate them I find.........So I just bumble & stumble around until something happens.

I guess I can't see how you figure they need to be running all day to be making oney to justify their cost.
A better question is what justifies them to run when crops are growing and it is mid July and there is no dirt to be worked up becaue crops are growing on it? When those 300 hp tractors are running in the field all day they are costing money (cutting into the bottom line), not making money (because you aren't billing them hourly to someone else).

Honestly by your reasoning you gave then how do you justify buying a $200,000 combine that only gets used in the fall to harvest? Same thing with the combine, if it's running it's costing you.

And yes I do understand the costs involved in farming and you have to spend moey to make money, but you want to run your equipment as little as possible not as much as possible.

Huh.......you just lost me on this one. Were we not talking about straight frame 2wd high hp tractors more so then 300 hp articulated ones?

I agree on the combine part, that's where the custom guys come into play.

I was talking only of straight frame machines, 100 hp or 300 hp.

Harvest and planting is not just spring and fall work though. You may have winter wheat that get harvested early or early corn that get knocked down in middle of summer, or hay that gets cut and harvested several times per season. Basically something is going on all growing season where these tractors can be used and usually do get used all the time.

What about the cost of ownership when they sit then? In your scenario it is better to rent then own. Don't actually know too many farmers that can buy a $150,000+ tractor and only use it a couple of weeks a year. That is ones that stay in business for long.

the people i know around hear that run pretty good size herds of cattle seem to pay off those big machines quick, they may not turn a profit and usually have another job but their trucks and tractors are paid for, and im talkin big machines.
