The pipe goes over the hill which would be the left of the picture if you are looking at the picture that show the front of my house. Nothing is perforated, all solid and it carries away just the roof runoff.

I did not buy this land and I had the house built for me....I grew up here. ODNR estimates that there are many more mines and "subsidence" issues than they have been able to identify.

Looking closer at the pics I see the topography slopes to the house and I see the leader pipe goes under ground, it looks like an area some one would of installed storm water management system across the back of the house, maybe going to daylight on the other side or to a catch basin.}

Once the water sits in a low spot it creates a funnel effect progressively getting worse, we would line the hole with filter fabric before filling to try and attempt to stop silt from flowing with the water.

Good Luck,

JB.[/QUOTE}

Okay thanks for the info.....

Anyways, after the rain we've had here is what it looks like. Now, please understand something..... I plan to put into place a drainage system that is the same as what I've done with the side of the house.

So it's obvious it's the storm water causing the undermining, just have to try and figure out where it's taking the dirt, back to square one :)

I'm not so sure about the storm water. I swale was built around the area wher the garage was built. The water did not backup in the pics until the disturbance started. We'll wee what happens tommorrow when they (Ohio Dept. of Nat. Resources) come back out as I have called them as instructed.

Check out this post from when I was building the garage, maybe you can see that whole picture.

You do have a funnel there now, swallowing up all the run off, so I think it is carrying the soil down with it, just not sure where it's going.
Time for some type of sono testing to make sure there's no huge casim under there that could cause a catastrophic cave in, after that document any structural damage to building, if they have a program for compensation.

I agree. They do.

Check out that previous post when I was building it and see what it looked like before things started, if you don't mind.

Something is going on and my gut says it's not good.

I looked at your thread, excellent documentation.

By looking at the second to last pic in that thread, I think you should cut the hill back more on the left side of the building and cut a more defined swale draining around the back down hill.

Looking at the pics I can see there is great deviation in the topography and suspect it's just a minor sub-surface anomaly, but who could say for sure without some testing.

Has there been any problems in the area caused by past mining activity?

When I was a kid our neighbor was digging a hand dug well on his property. They were quite deep after several days of digging in mostly red and blue clay but still couldn稚 hit water. One day when they returned to the well the ladder was gone and when they looked down to the well the bottom of the well was gone also. There was some silver and tin mining going on between 12 and 15th century and they were digging well just above one of the abandoned shafts.
When we were playing in the woods we found several entrances to old mines and of course entered them just with a burning branches or some cheap flashlight. My mothers just freaked out when she found out what were we doing.

What's more obvious to me.
The state had cave in problems at the I70 and I77 interstate exchanges due to abonded coal mines a few years ago.
This is at cambridge ohio.
Mega_Me
Is i believe in the adjoining county .
I believe Both Counties were heavily mined in years gone by.
MEGA -ME I bet your land is less than 60 miles from the I 70 and I 77 exchanges.

*Could be exactly what's going on since the area was once mined .

1*I think he should stay off the surface with any sort of heavy equipement.
Could be working over abanded mines and such activety could turn out to be digging your own grave.
2* see post #48.

not good if it's mining related.

LBrown,

It is aproximately 15-20 miles away.

The State came out again yesterday and decided that something needed done. They are going to come out and excavate it and see what the extent of things really are in terms of any issues that may affect the garage. Once that is determined then they will fix/reclaim as needed.

Now, who knows when that will be.

/ I fell into a hole. #51
That seems like a kinda odd approach if an abandoned mine shaft was suspected as causing the cave in.
Like LB said you'd probably want to stay off the area with heavy equipment till you knew more about the cause.

I assume if it's not mine related they don't charge you anything?

Just a guess, but based on probabilities I don't think it would be mine related. Just going by the odds, unless it was like Redneck in Training said and there were known mine activity in the area.

At least now you should know more after they open it up.

Good Luck,

JB.

I live in cave country and it initially looked to me like a small sinkhole that opened up perhaps due to the change in natural drainage that resulted from your building construction. But looking at the karst maps it doesn't look like you would have a lot naturally occuring sinkholes around your area. Could it be a small intermittent aquifer leading to a spring somewhere? Since there is suspicion of abandonded mine maybe being involved, take a look at this site and see if you find anything useful:

Abandoned Underground Mines IMS disclaimer

This hole is interesting so it will be interesting to see what you finally determine to be the cause and where that water is going.

/ I fell into a hole. #54
Well the first picture looked like a small drain type hole or a ground hog tunnel.

The other pictures[if thats the same spot] shows its next to where a drain for eves troughs go down under ground, could that be the cause?

[or maybe the drain drains into a groundhog hole!]

That's a mighty impressive ground hog to dig a hole like that.
"I'll be right back dear, I'm going to the store to buy a bigger gun...

/ I fell into a hole. #55
First picture looked to me to be a small hole, ground hog sized, maybe its bigger than picture shows.

Still bet its a drainage thing going on,some how or the other connected to water drains he already has in ground[or...groundhog!]
