That seems like a kinda odd approach if an abandoned mine shaft was suspected as causing the cave in.
Like LB said you'd probably want to stay off the area with heavy equipment till you knew more about the cause.

I assume if it's not mine related they don't charge you anything?

Just a guess, but based on probabilities I don't think it would be mine related. Just going by the odds, unless it was like Redneck in Training said and there were known mine activity in the area.

At least now you should know more after they open it up.

I live in cave country and it initially looked to me like a small sinkhole that opened up perhaps due to the change in natural drainage that resulted from your building construction. But looking at the karst maps it doesn't look like you would have a lot naturally occuring sinkholes around your area. Could it be a small intermittent aquifer leading to a spring somewhere? Since there is suspicion of abandonded mine maybe being involved, take a look at this site and see if you find anything useful:

This hole is interesting so it will be interesting to see what you finally determine to be the cause and where that water is going.

Well the first picture looked like a small drain type hole or a ground hog tunnel.

The other pictures[if thats the same spot] shows its next to where a drain for eves troughs go down under ground,could that be the cause?

That's a mighty impressive ground hog to dig a hole like that.

First picture looked to me to be a small hole,ground hog sized,maybe its bigger than picture shows.

Still bet its a drainage thing going on,some how or the other connected to water drains he already has in ground[or...groundhog!]
