Oh Harv ... I'll share an opinion with you if you don't mind. Believe me, they are not interested in how photogenic ANYONE is. What they want is a mixture of competence at any cost and intrigue. The latter is where the 'exploitation' comes in.
If you had 1 leg, a giant wart on both lips, spoke only mandarin, and sucumbed to frequent blackouts and fits, but could weld a feather to a ball joint, they'd put you on that show in a NY minute - as long as they were sure you could do something great or fail to the same degree (either is great) and wouldn't get anyone killed, maimed or injured, you're a shoe in!
