I found this on the ground outside my building yesterday, any ideas what this is?

I think I've seen something similar near some kind of mushroom or fungus kind of growth. I don't think they grow in cold weather, though.

It sure looks like an ant swarm, they do that once in a while here at the house. Sure they are not teeny-tiny ants?

There were about 8 to 10 of these piles. When I got back a few hours later they were all gone.

Probably an alien life form...and they assimilated someone who stepped on that mass (while you were gone).
