It sort of seems that we are being priced energy by the BTU content.

Don't forget that most of our millitary vehicles run on diesel.
If you run a bio-diesel blend you can cut your cost by atleast 25% in the winter and upto 74% in the summer if you make your own, plus we wouldn't be as dependent on foriegn oil.

Jim, personally, I think you did the right thing. If I had a heavy trailer to pull a lot, I'd want a diesel, but otherwise, these gasoline powered trucks are my preference.

We are in a world of ---- being strangled by some people for oil. You have not seen the last of high prices and it is going to get worse as summer progresses. Wait till next years heating oil bills start coming in. I can't print what I would like to see happen to the oil industry. It would get in in big trouble probably as a terrorist.

I have a 04 powerstroke 18 mpg no matter what... I saw diesel today for 274.9 I have also seen it today for 254.9 I still like the power when I need it and I dont think I want to sacrifice having a smaller vehicle to drive. I have a 04 f150 for a work truck when I tow the trailer it gets 12mpg and when I run short trips it gets 12 so I will keep the diesel. I also have a 94 Corvette that I consitantly get 23mpg so this does ofset my summer fuel expence.

If you only get 12mpg with your F150. Then how do all these people claim to be getting 17-20 mpg's with theirs?

i had an F150, 4wd one time too: it had the in line 6 that ford built for so many years, a great motor, but thats what i got for gas mileage too: i now have a chevrolet, with the 327 or whatever liter they call that engine, and i consistently get 17 until i tow something.

I don't believe those claims either. And, I think MPG like that might only be possilbe when you have very steady and consistent RPMs, and that is not how gas engines run...

I've gone in the opposite direction of some of you posting here-- I got rid of my gas f150 (was pretty dead beat anyway) and i got a '98 RAM2500 with 6 cyl cummins diesel. I tow lite things like wood splitters, tractors, etc. and, very occassionally. I do haul wood and stone, but again, occassionally. I bought the diesel because of the opportunity to run it on alternative fuel sources (e.g. biodiesel and grease). The week after next I'm trying biodiesel for the first time... And, I'm actively looking into grease burning conversion kit... Right now, with my current configuration, I'm getting 20-23MPG on my truck.

Diesel costs so much because there is such a HUGE demand for gas. Both from the US and more importantly asian world countries... (which are using fuel at an alarming rate - china and india) The crude sources are being competed for to produce more GAS.

Yesterday Crude reached an all time high- 66.00 per barrel. And, the surplus supply of gas continued to dwindle for the strait 6th week... People won't be able to afford to heat their homes this winter... And, my opinion is that within 5 years, ppl won't be able to afford to drive nearly as much as they do today.

Here are some sites which have interesting and scary reading...

www.oilcrash.com

I strongly suspect that in 5 years or so, power blackouts, food shortages, and lack of transportation availability, will be common issues

There is no strong replacement for fossil fuels. Basically, we're screwed...

As has been said by a couple of posters, I too have heard that some of the Dodge diesels get better mileage than do the Ford diesels. In my case however, my F-250 4X4 was getting what I'd get in the new one I bought, so there was no difference there. The general maintenance therefore was the next thing to consider, and again with my F-250, the new F-150 would be much less expensive. In my situation, under my personal circumstances, I felt as though it was the best economical thing for me to do.

There was also my concern over the value of the 3/4 ton and 1 ton diesel trucks dropping pretty fast due to diesel prices going up so high. My friend who is the general manager of the Ford dealership I have dealt with for years told me that due to this employee pricing that all the Big 3 have going on, plus the fuel prices, that the trade in values on big vehicles dropped. For example, GM suburbans dropped $1500.00-$2000.00, and that with diesel trucks, they also have starte to drop, but not as bad.

I was really right side up in my F-250, and didn't want to lose a lot of that equity. We all know that a lot of diesel truck owners really don't need a diesel to work with, but own one for whatever personal reason, be it status, cheaper fuel, etc. I figured that with all my other good reasons, this was only one more to add to the list for going back to gasoline and doing it now!! When all these "city boys" who do not really need a diesel rig start trading for gas engine vehicles, my concern is that there will be a glut of diesel rigs on the market and the value will plumet.

I'm sure many of you, like me, remember back in 72 when we had the other big fuel crunch. Back then they were trying to get us accumstomed to fuel closer to $1.00 per gallon, rather than the 19 cents per gallon we were paying. At that time, the value of larger vehicles took a nose dive. With so many diesel trucks out there right now and being driven by people who don't really need the diesel power etc. I kind of think that could ( may) happen again, this time with all those diesel trucks owned by those that don't really need them. As I said, there appears to be a bunch like that out there too!

I put a year's worth of thought into this decision and right now I'm convinced that for several reasons, I made the right move, at the right time. However, only time will tell, and like my wife says, " If diesel goes down in price now, it'll be because I switched back to gasoline"!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif..I don't think that'll happen though as no one seems to care about the man driving a big rig to make his living. If they did, they would have done something before now.

I think that's very generous of you to do that for all our diesel driving friends. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
