Horses: the sport of kings! If not for my horses, I would most likely not have to work an outside job to make ends meet.

The horse certainly brings out the emotions in a human. Being in their company, that can either be rewarding or frustrating. Perhaps frustrating because strong emotions do not go very far other than to perhaps intimidate the animal. Rewarding if you are able to reach a level of comunication.

For that, horses are certainly not stupid. Give them what they want and they will respond. Beat them as many have and they will hunker down but persever.

The horse has a far greater legacy in upward human mobility than the lowly automobile has. We tend not to respect where we have been though so that legacy is forgotten.

Now then "horse trading" likely came about not long after man first figured out how to utilize the horse. I don't see it as any different from any of the nonsense being bantered about by mass media of late. Ie; cut you credit card debt, earn thousands on the net, free CD for this and that, are you or a loved one affected by etc. etc.

Anyway, sorry to hear about your horse with the broken leg. At least we can still legally uthanize them.

Women are huge, expensive, belligerent and dangerous and despite that, they are also incredibly stupid, needful, fragile and high maintenance. I'll admit it. I just don't 'get' women.

:D :D

But really, horses are pets mostly, and to say fixing a horse will cost more than its worth is kinda silly. My dog cost me $800, have spent several thousand getting it fixed and all the first shots. Does that mean I spent more than its worth?

No, I'd spend $10k if she need help, she is part of the family. I waste more every year on school taxes, paying for other peoples mistakes.

I feel your pain, just the other day with high winds better than 50 mph we had no lights for 8 hours and both of our horses got out, found them 2 miles from home tired and sweating.
It took my son and I better than an hour to get them.

Yes they are pets and my 16 year old just loves them to death, both jumpers and dumb as rocks.

I don't ride them and don't want to, I just fix everything and prepare the rig so they can leave for a local show. Then I can spend some quality time with my 3120 cutting the grass.

Some of these replies are hilarious!

Horses are just like tractors.

You start off small, and then have the possibility to get over in your head. One horse can set you on the path to financial freedom or ruin.

At least when my S10 dies, I can get to the postoffice and grocery store accordingly.

Somehow a cow or donkey would not be the cool thing to show up on. :)

We have friends from France who say horse steaks are very good, but the animal rights folks in this country don't want anyone to eat horse meat, or anyone in this country to slaughter horses to ship the meat overseas.

Yes, ,Bird, I heard the very same thing.

I wonder if this may be contributing to the neglect cases, ie; people cannot afford to keep, yet the slaughter option is off the table.

We lost a $10,000 foal this year to an accident... strangled himself.
After that day we put insurance on all our horses. Hadn't really given it a thought before, because we never had a horse die on us.

Where is Cowboydoc when you need him? I think he was the only person I ever knew who made money, --big money-- on horses. His were cutting horses mostly. Of course, he probably had half a million tied up in infrastructure and his arena.

I enjoy seeing horses when I go to the local rodeo every summer. That's enough for me. It costs me $8 per person admission.;)

And Cowboydoc's daughters were (are) champion junior barrel racers.

From what I understand, horse meat actually gets better with age as opposed to the animals that we normally eat. I never had the pleasure thank you, but, if I was hungry I sure would.
