If it's any consolation for your family, George...The humans in charge of your pet's life and well being are doing what is in the best interest for the animal. He will no longer suffer and be in pain. Horses do not show pain like we recognize pain, but it's there. Your pet is very lucky to have such caring humans. In that way, I feel your daughter will understand. I am sorry for her loss, it's devastating to lose something you love.

Thanks for the sympathy guys. Her coach has been through this before and has done a good job preparing her for this event. My wife has taken her over to groom the horse and say goodbye. Then they will leave and the vet will put the horse down. They already have a hole dug and will bury the horse. While they are doing that my wife and daughter are going to get a tree to plant on its grave. They will go right back over there and plant the tree. The horse is to be buried in a field where other horses are buried and each 'grave' has a tree on it. Hopefully this 'process' will help some, her coach seems to think so.
Here is a picture that I took just the other day of my daughter with her other horse down near our cabin. The horse was lying in the sun and my daughter sat down beside her and the horse rested her head in my daughter's lap for 10 minutes or so. After a few days I'll make a big print of this picture and give it to her.

If my youngest saw that photo we would never hear the end of the "I want a horse" mantra. Its bad enough as it is now. If she saw that photo.....
Right now she is working on the "I want a puppy" mantra even though we have a dog. She has captured a couple of caterpillars that she wants to keep in her room. At least they are not the worms that were under discussion a few weeks ago!
Hope your daughter is doing a bit better today.
Our kids did much better than I thought they would when we had to put my GSD to sleep. I have a photo on Kelly on the wall and the kids put a post it note on it saying they missed at XMAS.

Yes we do.
Hopefully a Vet. Our Vet is also a neighbor and we told her that our youngest would be working for her one day. The vet said I hope not! I hope to be retired by then! Both kids are very focused on animals but the youngest is really FOCUSED. She just will not let go. CONSTANT and I do mean CONSTANT asking for horses, dogs, cats, birds, worms, lizards, fish, beatels, etc.
We thought that she would have a very hard time when we had to put down Kelly. We had been telling the kids for months that Kelly was doing poorly and one day they might come home to find Kelly gone. Which is what happened. The kids did much better than we expected.
They still talk about our dogs that have left us, Kelly, Chase and Thorpe.
