If your going to kill the mice use a trap so it kills him within seconds, sticky traps are cruel and poison is the worst thing you can use because all the other wild life eats the poison mice and it kills them or makes them ill, that also goes for your domestic animals, your cat or dog eats that poison mouse he gets sick or dies. Use a trap that will snap his neck and won't do harm to others.

We use a bar of Irish Spring placed where we don't want the mice. It seems to work. That, and our Norwegian Forrest cat who is quite the mouser.

"We use a bar of Irish Spring placed where we don't want the mice." I tried the Irish Spring method and the mice ate the bar of soap like it was a block of cheese.

We use a combination of traps, poison and flooding out their holes in the ground and letting the chickens catch them. I've tried a few versions of the five gallon bucket with a roller on top that's covered in peanut butter, but so far, the results have been poor. Putting a hose into a hole in the ground and flooding them out has worked the best at getting a lot of them all at once. I think out best count is around 80 mice. Every single one of them that came out was ate by a chicken!!!! Poison is used inside the garage, where we find their bodies all over the place inside the garage. We tried it outside, but noticed that the chickens seemed a bit off and think they where getting sick eating the poisoned mice. We never lost a chicken from it, but figured it wasn't something we should continue. Mouse traps with just a bit of cheese works too, but it's slow going. Good thing about the trap is the chickens love to eat them!! Cats haven't worked for us, but we're on the lookout for some more. Coyotes eat the cats faster then we can get them, and the mouse population just keeps increasing with the number of chickens we have. Currently we're over 40 chickens and it's just a matter of time until that number increases.

I sure didn't know mothballs didn't work but I do now. Just threw a couple of bags under my shed to try to get rid of an armadillo but he didn't leave.

Bought some Rat X for the backhoe and I will spread some around the generator while I'm at it.

We have a useless cat and several feral cats hanging around. Kind of surprised to have this problem.

Others say mothballs don't work but after rodents shredded wiring on my mini-excavator I packed the problem areas with mothballs. Four years later no problem but I do have to put up with the toxic odor.

Yup. Mothballs work very well for us. I wonder if it varies by type of mice? We have dear mice up at the cottage.

Mouse traps with peanut butter work for me. But have to replace the bait now and then as it dries out or is eaten by insects. It's just part of keeping up with nature in its various forms. Between the garage, the shed and the equipment Shelter I keep around 15 traps going year 'round.
The good thing about the traditional mouse trap is that you see the result immediately and generally cause no other harm to the environment.

I also learned to keep the "hoods up" on equipment, especially if it sets for an length of time. The population is kept low by an ongoing approach. ...kinda like trapping moles.

Cheers,
Mike

I have never had a problem with mice. We do have several feral cats around our place. Enough said.:)

Last Fall I even made an insulated cat box for my feral cat to sleep in inside the machine shed. I want him to like it there and he does. No mice.

Tomcat. I have some stashed in every vehicle. The blocks hold up pretty well on their own without the plastic box and can be zip tied inside engine compartments. Doesn't smell bad either.
