Oil & Fuel I hope I'm not the only one who's lost his fuel tank cap

"I've almost lost mine a 1/2 dozen times. I now place it on my seat while filling"

This is now my method also, and yes I've sat on it a couple times, gets your attention!!

I did the exact same thing when fueling my last tractor. Tank is located on the back of the tractor. I put away the fuel can, hopped on the tractor and plowed snow for hours. After I parked the tractor then I saw the cap was missing. Looked for the cap but alas, it was in a snow bank somewhere. Bought a new cap the next day. A week later I found the cap after some snow melted and put it in the garage for a spare. This actually happened twice in one season. The second cap wasn't found till spring. fortunately I had a spare in the garage.
If you can't find it buy a replacement. You'll find the old one when the snow melts.
The tank on my LS is in front of the step to get in the cab. No problem seeing if I forgot to put the cap on now.

I wouldn't run without a cap - I wouldn't want to chance dirt, bugs, moisture, mice, etc getting in there. If nothing else, wrap aluminum foil over the threaded part and stick a big rubber band around it.

If you follow this advice (and there's nothing wrong with it as a temporary solution) I'd further suggest pricking a 'pin hole' in the centre in order to allow the fuel to flow. Make the perforation from the inside 'up' IOT assist in keeping out water ingress.

Aw, in the grand scheme of things, $25 is really not that much. Plus, you'd always have a spare in case something similar happens. It would give great peace of mind.

Now that you've found yours and don't have an extra, every time you refill you'll fret over the original loss by recalling the circumstances. And now you have half a million TBNers to remind you!

Losing the fuel cap, losing the keys, losing the wrench, etc keeps this old fard busy; and that's why getting things done take so long.

And, if I was to lay the cap on the seat, I'd probably have to put a tack in it so as I'd really notice it.

IIRC, I did a similar thing but ran over the cap with the MMM going......I saw it shoot out of the deck.. Thus a new cap....dang it.

That's how I'd find it Mike!!!! :D

I checked on the Deere forum and none of us have misplaced our fuel caps.

Sorry, couldn't resist, glad you found yours.

LOL, been there done that!

My problem was to find a replacement for my Mitsubishi, which ended up being a Kubota cap.
I can now guarantee U that it will not happen again!

I riveted a short length of tiny chain to the cap with the other end attached to the cab.
(Sort of reminds me of mothers tying strings to the tots mittens)

Now id only I could find that filler cap filter.

Same idea for my 3 point sway arms. The turnbuckle barrels are now wired so as to not lose them.
Vibration can do odd tricks.

If I had experienced losing my fuel cap more than once, I think I'd rig a thin wire to it and a wire "T" on the other end in the tank, like a car's gas cap retainer, or maybe like chain saw's... but then, I have a hood to lay it on.
