I had assumed that it bent because something had the wheel locked and it couldn't turn so the tie rod bent. I haven't seen it happen but neither side has any protection at all. The left side has never bent. I think I will check on that guard thing.

I would try like me and a buddy did on our old Jeeps. In order to beef up, and protect the tierod while out Wheelin on rocky trails(like Rubicon), we tacked some 3/4 or 1" angle iron, so the "wedge" faced forward. Before doing so, we made sure the alignment was correct.

I bumped mine a few times, with no ill affects.

Strange, I have an older Kubota 4wd and the tie rods are right behind the front axle , it would be difficult to get them to bend, but I don't have power steering so I know when there is excessive pressure on the steering. Sorry for your problems, as long as you are not doing cultivating, then a bumper guard would be a good thing to do.

If it's tempered on heat treated in any way, the heating will probablt anneal it (which ruins the temper/heat treat).

Ditto, you can get some of the temper back by oil or water quenching it, Some knife manufacture (Henckle, German) actually Ice water quench it to keep it harder. If i have to bend a tie rod, I'd do it cold in a hydraulic press, it'll never be the same as original.

Why not welding a piece of flat stock to the area that is bowed some to keep it from bending.

JC,

yep.. it's already 'broke' anyway.. beefing it up can't hurt it much..

I just bent my front right rod on my L3400. How difficult is it to pull and replace? Do I need any special tools?? All help appreciated!

A friend of mine bent his tie rod by driving over a small stump. The stump caught the rod and bent it U shaped which caused both front tires to point in different directions.
I took the entire rod off using a tie rod fork and took it back to my garage. His tie rod ends are both adjustable so I cut off the ends with part of the threaded tube (which were still straight) and replaced the main cross tube with a piece of schedule 80 pipe. I inserted solid rod inside the schedule 80 and the cut off tie rod ends and welded it all up. Put it back on the tractor and adjusted the correct toe in and its been fine ever since. (or at least till he hits another stump). I did this on a weekend because the dealer wasn't open and it was probably cheaper than a replacement tube would have cost.

i don't kow your specific machine.. but in general.. a pickle fork or a tie rod pin seperator is generally used to remove the pin from the socket after removing the nut. pickle fork is 5$ at harbor freight. does ruin the dust boot usually.. but if the end is pad.. you will be repalcing anyway.

if yours is a threaded unit. it will just then be a matter of removing andf reinstalling good one and readjusting.

pin sets to socket when you take it down.. then re-cotter the castelated nut they usually come with.
