I KNOW i\'m stupid but....

This SHOULD be easy:
I noticed a hydraulic leak yesterday.
It is at the hose connection at the elbow of the backhoe.
It appears to be leaking at the threads of the hose where it fastens to the nipple/adapter/thingamajig (see attached photos) It seems like I just need to tighten it about a half turn or so. But there is no give or swivel in the hose - So as I tighten it the hose kinda kinks or twist towards the backhoe but I can't go any further and then it unwinds back to its restful state.
How did they gey this hose unto fixed threads at each end if there is no way for it to swivel.
I hope this makes sense...

Re: I KNOW i\'m stupid but....

You have to pull the pin and spin the dipperstick around and around. Or maybe hold the dipstick in place and have someone drive the tractor round and round.

Are you absolutely sure that there isn't a swivel in there. Every hose like that that I've removed has had a spinning fitting that allowed the hose to stay at rest while the fitting was tightened on each end. Maybe a close up picture of the actual hose end.

Re: I KNOW i\'m stupid but....

Could be that the swivel is just dirty or corroded. I'd soak it with some rust bust or similar product for a couple hours, tap it lightly and try again, it has to have a swivel.

Re: I KNOW i\'m stupid but....

Well, you are finding out about economy! There is a swivel, but I bet it is on the OTHER end of the hose. So, you need to take the hose off from the other side, tighten up the side that is leaking, then put the side with the swivel back on.

You do the extra work, and the MFG saved 58 cents...

Re: I KNOW i\'m stupid but....

Like the other guys, I would expect it to have a swivel and you'd need two wrenches; one to tighten with and one to hold the hose right behind the swivel. But if you absolutely sure it does not have a swivel, how about the other end of that hose. It it has a swivel, you could disconnnect it, tighten the end without a swivel, then put the end with the swivel back on. And my experience with hydraulic lines is that they don't have to be just real tight; they're designed to seal tightly without pulling hard on the wrenches.

Re: I KNOW i\'m stupid but....

Your picture shows the hose going through a bracket on the boom. Could the swival be beyond that bracket? If so try removing the bracket or unclamping the hose and see if that allows the hose to swival. But as all the others have said there is a swival somewhere in that line.

Re: I KNOW i\'m stupid but....

Is that a cover over the hose?

What's it look like up close?

I agree with everyone else that it will swivel, but you need to break if free. It's just froze into position.
