I absolutely HATE Sydney and, according to some Grey Ghost (from 9 bloody years ago), I'm a wanted man in that city!

I don't know if this is common in Australia, but i was talking to a German gentleman and mentioned the distance to a location in hours travel time. He grinned and said he just loves it how Americans commonly use time as a measure of distance.

We have some friends who just got back from Australia; my souvenir was a beer koozie that said "Cheeky Monkey Brewery". Now that is a very strange word combo! Haven't made the connection, but who cares...I hear they turn out some great brew!

I have enjoyed some time in Maine and NH. Very nice places we visited.

We have 254 counties in Texas and about 1100 school districts.

Ah, thanks. Ona very dead graveyard shift at dispatch I got curious and sstarted running texas counties on the National Lets system. I gave up at around 250. Spent about 8 years total down there, San Angelo mostly. Rater small counties and you could tell when you crossed a border - almost all of the wet counties had a liquor store just as you entered.

Was the map just deceiving or did they even look at one?

.

I married a girl from Hof, Germany. about 20 years later we got a letter from her niece saying she was visiting in Chicago and could we come pick her up for a couple days visit. Chicago to Colfax is a hard 2 day drive from here one way. In Germany you could be anywhere on the conteninent on the western side of the curtain in one days drive.

Big Blue, here that would mean you have red hair.

Blue
1. A person with red hair
2. A fight (See Fred and his mssus had a blue last night)

Bluey
1. A person with red hair (See Bluey over there, he'll help you out)
2. A summons (The wallopers dropped a bluey on me yesterday.... the police served me with a summons)

It's a local thing designed to confuse outsiders;)

Strange words indeed. You lost me back in posts 10 & 16 how Blue means a fight or person with red hair.

Yes, I saw the wanted posters last time I was there, forgotten what the reward was.
Time is commonly used as a distance reference here too and pubs are often landmarks along the way.
Another thing is the beer, overseas Fosters is portrayed as Australia's favourite, here it is not available and one of the worst drinks I have encountered, there are now a lot of micro breweries turning out some
excellent brews, Cheeky Monkey I have not heard of but it is a common expression used with children, another one is Two Dogs (Brewery) originating from the infamous Indian joke.
My own choice (at the moment) is 4 Pines Pale Ale which I quite like and imported Becks

Texas counties were set up with the idea that most would not require more than a days ride by horseback to reach the county seat. County seats are supposed to be as close to the geographic center of the county as practical. There are some, of course, where that is not the case but the majority are pretty close.
