Tractor
JD 2320; 4520
To All: I have been on this forum for some time now and feel like I have stated and oft re-stated my tractor inquisitions and purchases. As many of you know, I have owned several JD compact tractors (at least one from each series within the compact 20 series line). I currently have a 2320 which I keep down at my folks place. It is a good little tractor and honestly I like using it as much as any JD compact I have had. I also have a 950 ZTR which I am in the process of selling (I did not want to, as I noted in a post a few months back I have had to due to my mother not wanting it around where my aging dad might attempt to use it). I love where I live, but interestingly have no grass (actually 1/8 acre to mow--of seven acres property). My parents have over two acres they mow weekly in season (actually I do most times) and also I mow for my aging aunt and uncle, sometimes up to five acres there. When at my parents I mow frequently their neighbor's lot which is about three acres.

I have a job, family, hobbies and obligations of my own, but really try to help out whenever I can at my folks. My dad just turned 81 and my mother is a youthful 76, though she too is failing a little. My dad suffers with several medical maladies including mild dementia, but is pretty functional and still drives locally with accompaniment. He can still mow the lawn at their place, but his safety is in question. One thing I have never lost enjoyment for is mowing. For me, using a nice mower on a well-kept expanse of grass is truly relaxing. I also must admit that since a youngster, I have also had an enjoyment of equipment. This carries through to today. For the past year or two, I have really looked at a John Deere front cut, specifically the 1545 or 1565 to use in some of these duties. Either machine is likely way more than what I would need, but boy they seem nice. In total, I have about ten acres I could mow biweekly dependent on my schedule but could really get by mowing only my parents two-ish acres regularly and giving up the rest. In all honesty, I could really farm out all of it but I do not want to. This begs the following questions:

1. Keep my current 2320 and sell the 950? (My current arrangement)
2. Sell the 2320 too and try to get a 1545 or 1565?
3. Sell them all and contract out, and forget I enjoy mowing?
4. What is a "good" deal on a front cut like these mentioned; are they worth it?
5. If #4 is Yes--go new or used (my dealer says these depreciate quite lot and are not as popular these days, something to be concerned about)
6. Other options

In advance opinions are appreciated. I suppose on one hand I am trying to justify the potential purchase of a machine I may not need but want. On the other, I am looking for someone with more sense than I to draw my attention to potential pitfalls to this consideration which I may not have considered. As the grass gets green, my heart turns to.....mowing, which for me can be an expensive proposition.

The cheapest thing to do is attach the problem not the mower combination. Might be easier to either pick up a small trailer and take the mower home with you. I have a similar problem with my brother who has some handicaps. You could change the ignition switch out and keep the key in your pocket.

In your case using the excuse to mow somewhere else and taking the equipment with you might be the best way out of the predicament. I don't see how buying a different mower is going to change anything. This is regardless of how your mom feels about the ownership issues.

FWIW, bet your dad would like to use a new 1565 too.

I have a similar situation with my dad, he's 82 was a heavy equipment operation for 38 years. I can see him really starting to slow down. In the last few years he has had a knee replacement that really hasn't helped as he really has trouble walking. Mentally he's hasn't showed any signs of any problems. After much persuasion I finally talked him into selling his 800 Ford.It was just to hard for him to get on and off it. I live just down the road and help out alot, but I try not to stop him with doing things that I feel he can still safetly do. He was using the ford for plowing snow, now he's using my sportsman 500. When we get hit hard with snow that's when I go down and help out. As far as mowing he has about 2 acres of lawn that he still mows with a old lx 176 that I can't talk him into up grading. I guess my point is that I would keep or get what ever equipment that you would be happy with. No matter what it is our dad's will always want to try them. We will be there some day and I know my son will worry about me,heck he does now.

John, many emotions reading about your folk's and the effort you make trying to balance the constraints of time and distance.

It seems that you've found a mix of equipment that serves your purposes quite well. The "fly in the ointment" appears to be your Dad's continued desire to "get out there and DIH"!

Here's a suggestion: Buy a "throw-away" lawn tractor for your Dad - a JD 175 or something on that order.

And build a lock-able storage shed that's as much out of your Dad's "line-of-sight" radar as possible for the 950.

He can "putter and cut" here and there with the 175 and you can bat clean-up with the 950 every week or so.

Unless you believe that your Dad can longer safely manage even a JD 175...

Best of luck with your decisions.

I too, love to mow.

You already have the equipment to mow anything
you want to mow.
I would keep what you have.
Like someone else mentioned, maybe trailer your mower
back and forth from your dads.
It is not going to make any difference what machine you have
sitting at your parents home, your dad is going to want to try
it out and see if he can do the job.

Keep what you have. Trailer the mower to your parents.
And only if you want, maybe cut down on some of the other
mowing projects that you do.

Used or new?

Id probably look for a used front mount and let someone else take the depreciation hit. Some of the older F90x ? (i forget the actual model) looked pretty good. Im not sure what the dealer meant about not holding value as the F90x's are still selling for a pretty good cost. Even the smaller F501? of which im more familiar still seem to hold their value.

Another option would be a smaller golf course rough/trim mower from Jacobsen or Toro. New wont be a cheap option as they are pretty expensive as commercial equipment, but used isnt so bad. There are a ton of them out there compared to the deere. They can be found at Golf Course equipment suppliers and even public auction if you wanted to wait a bit. Heres a AR3 for 13500 OBO to give an example of what can be had if you shop around http://cgi.ebay.com/JACOBSEN-AR3-DECK-MOWER-KUBOTA-DIESEL-GOLF-GREENS-ZTR-/260752670061 72" of mowing goodness. :D Or something like a Turfcat if you want a wide single deck out front. The 3 decks on the jake will follow severe contours better though.

As you are realizing the machine at your dads has to go (at least to keep the peace).Maybe a smaller mower for him to putter around on is in order.

If you do get the larger mower, 1.You need more lawn (hey, who doesnt :D) and 2. you need a trailer. You could move the machine from place to place and mow your whole family in no time.

Come on... the new, plastic 175's at Home Depot and Lowes are not EVEN in the same league as your 185 Hydro "TANK"!!

IMHO it all boils down to whether or not your father is going to mow at all. I was in a similiar situation. Dad's old Cub 124 was about worn out and he spent some time working on it and jury-rigging something at least once a month. With my son mowing several yards and working full-time too, using our mower (Kubota ZD) and mowing it myself was out of the question. I wound up getting a JD 325 (nice 1996 model w/ only 370 hrs.) for Dad to keep and use, or me to use if I go over to do it. It's far easier for him to operate and safer in that if his foot comes off the pedal - it stops, unlike the clutched Cub that would go right on.
If you're going to be doing all the mowing yourself, I'd get a top-line machine to reduce my time to a minimum - especially if you're doing the neighbor's too. Hiring that much mowing out would be expensive, although possibly a wash compared to the cost of a new front deck machine, but I'd rather do it myself too. I wish you well on your decision John.

that is a lot of acerage to mow. and more to the point they are all in different areas meaning multi loading / unloading.

i would honestly invest in something, that has the best mow time. ZTR mower for example. so there is less weed-eating. and maintaining things.

ZTR vs any other riding lawn mower. they all have there pro's and con's. ZTR's normally have some sort of spring levers or like. that will stop the tractor. riding lawn mowers (new types) generally have some sort of foot clutch, and when release stops things. they all should have some sort of seat getting off stops engine thing.

for myself i am looking at obtaining "gang of reel" mowers. 5 to 7 reel mowers to pull behind, for up to 7 to 12 feet wide area cut. vs a bat wing style 3 deck finishing mower that fits behind the tractor. with a smaller size ZTR or light duty riding lawn mower. to do trim work, before getting weed-eater out.

=============
trailers are not that expensive. there are plenty in local trading/ad papers and on craigslist. that could handle a ZTR or riding lawn mower.
