Kubota BX 1500 and Bolens ST125
I would like some opinions for my next purchase. I've been looking at some of the large garden tractors. I've noticed that, in some cases, for a couple thousand more I can get subcompact tractor that appears more capable than the large garden tractors. I will admit that most of the duty will be mowing (2 acres). My wife wants a garden. The ability to move/level dirt would be nice, especially here on the Texas gulf coast (clay is not a shovels best friend). I like the BX1500 or the 18xx. Am I thinking of too mcuh tractor? Is my reality more along the lines of a G series garden tractor? I also have about 550 foot of ditch to mow, part of which is rather steep. Since the county redid my road, the ditches have become a kind of white knuckle experience. They left some hard pack on the slope with some high and low spots. Your opinions are appreciated.

Just from what I read... I would think a BX1500 with a MMM would be a good fit for you. The G series are great units... but for the price, I would buy a BX15 first. It is a lot more capable than a GT, and the price is probably pretty close. With the BX you have the power of a 3PH, PTO, and 4WD. It will not be as nimble for mowing as a GT but that will be a small price to pay!

Good luck!

When my Cub Cadet 107 died, I made the same calculation. I could have bought a garden tractor, but for a couple thou more, I could get 4wd, FEL and 3ph. If ALL I was ever going to do was mow, it would have been a waste of money, but when is mowing all you're ever going to do?

I've got 30 hrs total on my bx1500 with about 12 hrs on the 48"mmm. I have been pleasantly surprised with the manuverability of this tractor, and the quality of the cut is impressive. The remaining hours have been moving rocks and wood chips with the FEL and grading work with the boxblade. I expected to get a lot or utility out of this tractor, and it hasn't disappointed me yet.

I do not think you are thinking of too much tractor, and I don't think you would regret it if you chose one of the bx tractors.

BTW, if I could have fit the 2230 thru my storage shed doors, I would have coughed up the extra $ (easy monthly payments and 0% for 36 mos), but I don't feel shortchanged at all with the bx1500.
