I need a pole-pruner. Any new ideas I should consider? I could build one maybe...

Bit the bullet, spend the $600, cry once and be happy forever... Anything other than self powered (gas), electrics all have problems of running out of power (batteries need recharge) or having some sort of generator and a extension cord ... Both are negatives once you get outside the barn....


I have used a ECHO and STIHL 12 footers and most seem to operate the same, the big thing I noticed was the handle and throttle... Either one with the loop handle with throttle in loop are really awkward and tiresome and does not fit hand well and it gets miserable after time in use.... While still in store raise the unit up to almost vertical with hand gripping throttle at about chest height and see how well it fits your grip...

I did try it out with the STIHL 91R,even with the extension it felt better or easier to hold upright than my old Yardman elec. pole saw. So I went back to the dealer this AM and asked to trade up and with $100 he gave me the STIHL 131R. I知 going to cut out my survey lines today and limb 2 pine trees that blew over last night to break it in the engine and get me shape. HP shouldn稚 be a problem and it weights the same as the 91R.

The pruner is awesome, ran it cutting survey lines on my wood lot for an hour, it cut fast effortlessly, especially getting to the ends of low hanging pine tree branches. Noticed a few sparks flying off the chain a few time? It appears to be well oiled. And only used surprisingly a small amount of gas.

I have the big Stihl Pole Saw. I think I paid about $550 for it. Crazy amount of power. You can run a full tank of gas through it and then your arms will fall off. She gets a tad heavy in a hurry.

Stihl Combi works great but is heavy and expensive.

Ive seen this on sale in the flyer and was tempted to try it.

I finally settled on this STIHL drive 131R,extension and pruner in here ($1k) Crazy price but I was tired by dead battteries, second hand pole saw and trimmers this will run everything’s tha’ll attached to it.

I found that the loop handle of the Echo 2620 is comfortable and useable... until you get it down below chest height, like when you're cutting stuff closer to the ground. Then it's hard to get your hand on the part of the handle that has the trigger safety. Fortunately I don't run it down there much.

I'd have gotten the big Stihl but it was a four stroke and I like two strokes. And it was more expensive.
