They aren't new, but I would suggest looking at the grey market Yanmars. They can usually be purchased in good condition in the $500-$750 range. I've had mine for about 4 years now and probably till 1.5-2 acres a year in conditions varying from deep topsoil to sodded heavy clay. Mine will "walk" over rocks and roots it can't churn out. I run a 53" wide unit behind my JD770 (20 PTO HP) with no problems so I think you could go with at least a 60" unit.

The only major caveat I have found to the Yanmar tillers is that they sometimes take a little work to get them mounted on some tractors correctly. I don't know about parts, b/c so far I haven't needed any. Oh yeah, unless you want to do some fab work, make sure you get a 3 pnt model and not a 2 pnt model.

I check in on the Yanmar forum as there are a number of dealers that post there plus a number of posters know of other decent dealers, some may be in your area.

I've been very pleased with my Yanmar tiller. Was in very good condition and is so quite I sometimes have to turn around to make sure it is running. Since I also have a Yanmar tractor, I've got my tiller set-up to work with the UFO controls which auto control depth and tilt. I paid $600 a couple yrs ago. Oh, there are numerous variation of Yanmar tillers including a shuttle offset model. Many of the models have rear mounted adj guage wheels that can help control depth.

The pics: What it looked like as received from Japan, the tiller in action in the garden & what the UFO does to control out of level conditions. Will maintain level when ground is +/- 10ï½° off level.

I really like my CCM M-160 but it out of your price range
I would advise that whatever tiller you end up with make sure that it will till an area wider than your wheel width. Jay

Jay,

4 ft. tiller 3 pt. bracket is welded off center/offset/, hence it can be used for a wider tractor........am I wrong , or where's the catch??
I also need a tiller just for 1/4 ac/now anyway/, so I want to buy it before the price will go thru the roof. I have L 3400 and KK 4 ft seems to be reasonable from my perspective...but I am a rookie gardener.

I am not sure how close to a Rural King store you are I know there are some in Tn. I bought a Caroni brand 56 in. 2 years ago for about a $1000 and so far I have had no problems with it.

Nothing wrong with an offset tiller. It will cover one of the tire tracks. IMHO the problem with on-center tillers that are narrower than the tire width is that there will always be compacted/tilled soil (i.e. tire tracks) in you worked soil. Some individuals operating this type tiller-tractor setup will usually use the tire ruts for garden paths.

the brackets aren't always welded...sometimes they are held on with u bolts which makes them more versatile as to setting them up.

thanks Jay,

I think 4 ft would be plenty for my needs. And one wheel for a garden path is a great idea.

In your price range I'd suggest a 2 bottom plow and a 5' disk. With these 2 you can do as good a job as you'll get with a tiller and it will probably take half the time.
