I don't care what in looks like, or how goofy or "Elmer Fuddish" it may make me look, I want a hat that will keep my head & ears warm when I'm outside in well below freezing weather this winter. I'm about ready to toss out all these knit type caps I have been wearing as they just aren't warm enough.

Checked out a couple of chain type outdoor stores where I ran into the cruel joke called "one size fits all". Yeah, right... unless you have a big fat head like myself. :(

So what's keeping your head warm this winter??

Carhart makes a nice Elmer Fud type hat. Very warm

I use a balaclava with a regular cap covered up by a hoodie...
This is the headgear of choice when I go to football games and can't move around much...
Works great...
The balaclava keeps the ears warm while the cap and hoodie/sweatshirt keeps the top of the head warm...
I usually wear another leather coat over the sweatshirt/hoodie...
That with several layers of clothes works well in freezing weather...

Jymbee,

There's a reason Elmer Fudd wears a hat like that.....When I'm out "Elmer Fudding" in NH during the dead of the winter in 3 feet of blowing snow nothing else comes close to keeping your head warm with the flaps down

Definitely one with ear flaps that buckles under the chin. Rabbit fur lining for total warmth and comfort. Regards, Mike

So, my wife is really into fiber crafts, and I can tell you one thing from experience: for knit or crocheted hats, alpaca fiber is a LOT warmer than wool. I was amazed! Good thing to know... And I'm guessing there may be even warmer fibers.

But I agree with others here that there are warmer headgear options than a knit hat.
