Pelco is a fairly expensive route unless you aren't on a budget. Many commercial businesses use them. We installed a DVR on a server and several Axis cameras. The Axis cameras weren't too bad as far as cost goes, but one of the more expensive I suppose? We configured the software to only record on motion.

We researched and found several good reviews on Axis cameras, but I've seen some cheap coax cameras in convenience stores with pretty close quality so who knows.

Thank You all, I much appreciate the input. I think its important to know that the author of the thread is reading your comments.

I have some of their stuff, color cameras, with pan and tilt with remote. They offer lots of pkg deals. With the right pkg, you can check out your property from anywhere in the world. It can also be programed to send you e-mail of intrusions.

A couple things to consider:

If the recorder is in the same building you are protecting make sure the recorder is not easily found. They can steal the video evidence or burn it down with the building. Many systems come with the ability to send snap shots and/or video clips to places on the internet. That way, there is an off-site storage area for the evidence. ;)

They have a system that will tie into the internet so you can record and watch from your house. Some will go as many cameras as you want ans you can touch the creen adn control that camera OR have stationary cameras that turn on by motion.

The fun thing is if you are up late at night on the computer you can have eye's on the club in real time, very cool stuff.

Otherwise I would get Infrared camera with the highest quality you can afford. Nothing worse than having video that is useless.

"Nothing worse than having video that is useless"

Very true, something most folks don't consider, having a camera doesn't always mean you have the criminal. For instance:

"I need to see who broke into my car last week. Fine, here is the recording, it will take you about 24-hours to FF through a week痴 worth of recordings, let us know if you find the bad guy."

24-hours later - "I found a recording after my window was broken, but the camera was not pointing (panning) at my car win it happened."

Before spending any money, I would recommend you clearly define your expectations.

Good Luck!

We do not have break in's, mostly just dumb stuff by kids bored during summer vacation. I almost think that we could have dummie cameras that would keep the "honest" kids honest. We do plan to allow internet viewing. The DVR and such would be in a vault type cabinet.

I also agree about camera quality. It continues to amaze me to watch the news and see a robbery at a quickie mart and watch the video footage where the suspect is probably a human or maybe a tall dog, he could be a she, the skin color is unidentifiable, the suspect might be wearing a hat and carrying a shotgun or maybe it was just a small stick type thing. Point is, the video at most places is pretty bad. I don't want that. If $3500 gets me a DVR and one good camera, thats a starting point.

Out system at work has 4 dvrs with a 64 camera capability (16 per dvr). It records everything all the time but puts motion time stamps when there is activity. The nice thing about that is you can search by events in a time frame. So if you know something happened sometime between Monday and Wednesday, you just search for events on those days. It can play in normal time or be sped up to play in 2x, 4x, 8x and 16x so searches go pretty quick. It is only limited by the quality of the cameras. We have a few color cameras but most are B&W. For our purposes, they work fine.

Most are indoors but we do have a few in weatherproof enclosures outdoors. We also have one mounted on a building a block away at our parking lot. The signal goes over wireless 2G system. We can control pan tilt and zoom on that one.

Be careful about recording sound. In some areas that is illegal, so check.
