Maybe you could find a parts tractor with good running gear but cosmetic or accessory problems for cheap money. Switch your improvements over to that rig and save some $. The SOS transmissions seem to be big $ to fix.

that 10 speed might just need maintenance and adjustment.

at this point you've got abot 3x the tractors value into it.. IE.. a deep pit. most people pay about half price for a machine with a working sos trans vs one with a manual, etc.. change that to a non working SOS.. and you'd be better to part it out.. and you'd still loose your but.

I'd get the sos manual for that tractor and go thru the pressure and servo checks and band adjustment procedures. hit john smith's site.. he has a good writeup on sos trans diagnostics.

also.. over ont he ytmag ford forum, there is a small but stalwart holdout of sos owners that offer GOOD tech suport for others unlucky enough to have a non working sos trans.

That's all good points, Chris. He should find somebody who knows SOS and discuss the symptoms. If they can advise or help him be successful at repair, he'll have a lot more value in his tractor, whether he's keeping or selling it. Just don't get carried away and spend too much more money.

yep.. as it is, 6k into that machine is mor ethan it is worth with a working sos.. non working and it's a 1500$ engine and running gear basically. I for sure wouldn't put any money into it past an oil change and filter.. price for a set of hyd gauges and feelers for the adjustments.. at most I might replace the front clutch.. other than that.. sos parts are like gold .. I know guys that are good sos people and specifically hunt down non runners and auction deals knowing they can get the machine at 1/4 to 1/2 value.. and just hope it's a 25 cent oring, and not a input shaft or worse.. and if it is.. they shell the tranny out for parts for the next aquisition, and then sell the engine and rear and tires .. etc to cover the initial purchase cost.. and then still have a bucket of salvage sos parts for the next roll of the dice. I've seen the whole gambut in their repair reports.. literally.. 25 cent oring fix to complete 2500$ trans overhaul or swap to a junkyard crashbox manual..
