uh.. he said he saw the valve train moving for 1 & 2

timing gears are up front..

that kinda torpedos your broken crank theory....

are you familiar with that 120ci flathead.. or just taking potshots?

no attitude at all.

it's just not helpfull to toss out guesses that may take the OP in the opposite direction.

fact. timing gears are at the front.

if the back half of the cam is turing at all.. the front of the crank is turning.

I was referring to his post where he stated there was no compression on 1&2 cylinders and he had compression on 3&4. Just giving my opinion like everyone else here. Unless you are the one turning the wrench we are all taking potshots.

Yes, the fan turns while I crank.

Broken crank will allow 3and4 to turn over 1 and 2 won't. Does the fan turn while you try to start it?

That opinion wasn't supported by facts!

The cam can't spin if the front of the crank don't!!

And the back half of the cam can't spin if the front half don't!!

Anyway, I got the head removed yesterday. Doesn't look like I had a stuck valve.... it was a blow head gasket. The gasket was completely GONE between #1 and #2. Do you guys concur?

Also, I have included a few photos for your review. I took a lot more than what is shown here.

My questions:

1) I will use Permatex #2 gasket sealer with a new metal gasket after cleaning up both surfaces. Any tips?
2) Should I order and install new valves? Is that something you should automatically do? I have had this tractor for < 1 year but who knows if/when it was done before.
3) What does the block and head look like to you? I am talking specifically about the carbon marks... Does that look OK or indicate any other issues?

I'd like to do what I need to do before I button this thing back up.

PS: The cylinder walls looked really nice!

Looks like you found your problem.

I wouldnt use that specific gasket sealer. They make a copper based spray stuff that is made for head gaskets.

Product Selector

Thats what I would use (and have done so in the past).

AS to replacing anything else, I wouldnt. Cause short of doing a full out rebuild, how do you know when to quit? New valves.....might as well do a new cam/lifters.......then might as well do the timing gears.....might as well pull the motor and throw in new bearings.....pistons and rings.........etc. Just never know when to pull out.

So fix the issue at hand and stop there. :2cents:

1, you already KNEW you didn't have a stuck valve, as you saw them moving!!!! Even though the other poster thinks you can have front-half of a broken crank and front half of a broken cam, and still magically have the back half turn..... ( wow! )

you will likely SOON have ANOTHER blown head gasket if you use permatex #2 on it.

if the hed and block don't look tracked and pitted in the blown out area, i'd clean it up well with brake cleaner and a swipe with a green scrubby, allow to flash dry, then i'd put my new hg on, and , if you think the deck or head looks bad enough to warrant it, some copper coat spray on the metal gasket.. or indian head in a fiber gasket.

install and torque, let set and cure a day

then run engine a few minutes to get it warm and retorque

The back half can turn when cranking off the fly wheel, I don't know what your problem is with me, but I am tired of your smart $&# remarks. If you can't reply in a civil manner the keep your mouth shut.
