The wrench can be used at the bead end, but that is not quite as positive as using it exactly at the sealed end. I have seen many filters collapsed when using the tool anywhere but at the sealed end.

<font color="red"> Most likely because the filter was overtightened and/or not lubricated when it was installed!!
Most instructions suggest that the filter be 'hand tightened'!!

Perfectly correct Fourteen.
That's the only instruction I know.

By the way besides the collapsed ones, I have had some so tight , we have had to drive a long screwdriver, or punch all the way through the case, or use a chisel and hammer on the bead.

When all else fails, get a three legged filter wrench. There are many brands with slightly different designs and some are called a "3 jaw filter wrench" instead of 3 legged.

But watch out for the cheap imports that can't get a good grip on the filter because they don't exert enough pressure and don't have decent teeth on the jaws. Gee -- sounds like I am describing the one I bought /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

If you do end up with one like mine, rubber band assist works wonders. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

<font color="red"> Since most of us do our own oil changes, we know which jerk to blame if we can't easily get the old filter off!!

If the new filter is tightened just to the point where the rate of rotation abruptly decreases while the tightening torque abruptly increases, that is plenty tight enough!! The filter gasket is fully compressed, and no leaks or loosening will occur.

Always remove the new gasket from the filter, and coat it on all sides with motor oil. It will turn on more smoothly, provide a better seal, prevent the gasket from adhering to the filter base, and will be easier to remove.

Always drain the oil, change the filter, and refill with oil, in that order! Years ago my Dad had his engine ruined because some gas jocky removed his filter, went out to pump gas, came back and put in fresh oil, but had never drained the old oil out!!

I've never removed the gasket from a new oil filter to coat both sides, and never before heard of anyone doing that, but I do always coat the face of the gasket (the exposed side which will be the one going against the engine) with fresh motor oil.

Removeing the new gasket should be interesting. Exspecially when it becomes the old gasket stuck to the motor block and not noticed! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'll bet most of us haven't done that more than once! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif I think that memory stays with you a lifetime. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Bird, no doubt about it!! I was 17, had a 2 door 66 Impala and proud of the oil change/tuneup that day performed on my parent's feshly sealed asphalt driveway.....started up the Chevy and the asphalt got a good coat of oil! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
