Maybe you ought not to be messin' with machinery /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif. That's the same alternator and regulator, (according to Hoye), as the YM2000/240, so I would take both to a NAPA Autoparts, or any parts store with test equipment and have them tested. Tell them they are out of a '72 Datsun/Nissan 510 w/o AC., (thanks to "California" for that info). They should be able to fix you up with identical parts for a small % of the cost of tractor parts.

Ditto to what Norm said. Have you tried replacing the battery and see if it starts and runs correctly? You may have gotten lucky. With the tractor running check the voltage and it should be about 13.6 volts if the alt is working correctly. Some shopps will just try to sell you a whole new altenator when all you need is the diode to be replaced. The mechanical regualtor is not repairable. The diode is easy to replace as well. Some are internal and some are external. If you do not have the expertise to replace the diode and auto electric shop can do it for a small chare

Alternators don't usually work after losing their smoke, for any number of reasons, but it's worth your while to try it if you have a volt/ohm meter.
