Okay so i am going to have a pole barn built hopefully in the next month! My question is i do plan on doing a concrete floor just not for another year. I was just going to put gravel in it for now.
1.) It is a 24'x24' pole barn, what kind of gravel should be put in the barn?
2.) Also how much gravel will i need?
3.)And lastly how do i do it so that next year i can have the concrete floor installed?

Thanks for your help.

if you ar gonna put the concrete in for sure.. and at most a year from now. do it now. all that extra time doing the gravel and the cost will be a waste for only 1 yrs use.

We just put concrete in pole barn built the previous year. You will need to put pressure treated around the inside of your poles. We had put No.1 crushed stone down, this packs well and serves as a base for the concrete.

Do the concrete now and then attach the barn to the concrete.... Keeps the poles out of the ground. If you can't afford to do both now wait 6 months until u can.

Depends on the soil and compaction... just have it built like you were going to put concrete in and then don't. The crushed gravel needs to be compacted that will be the base... The doors will be above the grade (so they are even with the finished floor) so you would need to accommodate that. Should be fine.

i like friction pile construction vs surface poles.

stronger. ( costs more.. )

Forgot to mention that this is on 8'-0" of fill, so the post will be 8'-0" in the ground. I want to do the concrete when we build our house as it will be a little cheaper, since we will be pouring the basement and garage floors then. I was thinking of putting in the gravel as if i were going to put in the concrete floor and at the OH door just put a 4x4 down and build like a ramp of gravel on either side, this way the OH door has something to seal on.

8 feet of fill? How will it be compacted?

Unless you really get it compacted perfectly (big sheepsfoot roller worked every few inches during the fill process?), I would think it will take many years for the dirt to settle enough to support a concrete floor without further settling and cracking.

It was compacted by two big dirt pan movers, i was told this would compact it enough that there would be little settlement. This is also why i want to wait a year before putting in the slab, to let the fill dry out some.

it's not so much a moisture issue as it is a compacted lift issue.

if the builder put in small lifts and rolled them with pans.. it should be fine. i'd built building pads that way in places where a vib roller was not legal due to ground nesting owls and well / sediment issues. we just pushed dirt up with a dozer and rolled it down with a loaded 613-c pan. :)
