I’ve got a friend who had some emergency surgery about 12 days ago. I helped him put some food plots in today. He’s got a John Deere 5310, about a 25 year old tractor. It’s a straight manual 3 speed with 3 ranges, so 12 forward and 3 reverse. It’s a nice sized tractor and I got used to it pretty quickly. A picture of me running a disc with it.

Nice looking tractor. My next will probably be geared, although after 8 years I finally have stopped stalling my HST.

I love my JD 870, which is around the same vintage and also gear drive. Drove it today, chipping some storm damage from Hurricane Hellene.

I don't consider either of my M9 Kubota's old either. One is a 2000 and the other is a 2002. Just getting broken in now.

The only complaint I have with the 12X12 gearbox on the Hurlimann is that the clutch is a bit grabby. Makes trouble when trying to just move a few inches.

I used to have a 1996 JD870. I sold it when i got my kioti, but i wish i kept it. Many times i could have used a smaller tractor.

9 speed not 12. One reason I don't even look at them. Not enough gears in them. They are nice size and decent styling. Couple low hour ones around here that I would love to get my hands on but the gearing puts a halt on that.

Your correct, 9 forward, bad math on my part.

I had a 2002 5310 exactly like that one. It has a sync shuttle transmission. A bit more complicated than a straight gear drive but essentially the same. I have regretted 1000 times trading that tractor when I got my new one. I did have WR Long 3rd function installed on it new but later had live 3rd function hydraulics installed on it when I got my grapple. I now have a grapple bucket which is 100 times better for me that a grapple attachment.

BTW a sync shuttle is actually 12 forward and 3 reverse. 3 ranges, 4 gears plus reverse. 2nd and reverse are across from each other so those are the commonly used forward and reverse gears.
