Kind of requires more input from the OP, no? In my case your "6 ton skid steer" wouldn't have matched the work done by my 55hp tractor and dump trailer: total trip travel of 1/2 mile, 1/2 to 2/3 of the distance on roadway surface (about 110 trips).
I've only had one need for a skid steer (drilling holes for fencing), and without a doubt that combo was an excellent match for the work I needed to get done. I've rented excavators and I'm pretty sure that no skid steer can compete with how quickly an excavator can move dirt out of the ground.
Sweeping statements can be problematic.
