JD 3203 HST DOES NOT have cruise. It's the first HST tractor I tested...and I think I'll be sticking with a synchro/shuttle.

Looking at all the big names including Massey and Kioti for 29 to 35 HP syncro/shuttle with electro/hydraulic PTO...no 2 stage clutch...just my preference.

Don't forget AGCO -- the other Massey. Same as Case and New Holland are essentially the same tractors.

That business of always running wide open seems like a pretty commonly held idea here. I think they are happiest when running at a constant speed that delivers enough power and torque for the job at hand, but not necessarily full throttle. They CAN run wide open all day, but they don't need to do so.

Well when you're plowing or baling...you'll be running wide open or you have more tractor than you need for the job which is NOT cost effective farming...:)

No offense but you couldn't give me a geared anything! Gears went out in the 70's and early 80's. I know Hydro is expensive but much like divorces, **** well worth the money.

They make both geared and hydro because they both have strengths. Gears are better for most real farming needs, while hydros are better for operating (loader work) and mowing. Pick the one that fits your uses. The same goes for the R1 vs R4 debate. They make choices because there's not one perfect solution.

That seems true enough, but for a serious farmer -- which I most definitely am not due to lack of funds, time, and land -- a CUT running wide open is probably more costly than a bigger but older machine running at part throttle.

Has anyone ever done a survey or something similar to determine the ratio of people here who farm for a major part of their income versus the rest, who more or less have a tractor to enhance a rural lifestyle? I don't mean that in a derogatory manner. It just seems that most of the posters here use their tractors as part of a hobby or secondary activity, so the tractors are very useful, very helpful, very nice, and very fun, but not a necessity. I could get along without mine if needed. It would be a lot more like work making and bringing in firewood, cleaning the barn, clearing the driveway, and a hundred other things I use it for, but if I sat down and did the math, the thing would undoubtedly be an expense, not a source of increased income or savings.

We debate all the points like HST vs. Gear, solid color vs. plaid, and so on with great interest and passion for our points of view, but what percentage of us actually depend on the machines for our livlihood? I would guess less than 20%, not counting dealers and such who post here. Given that, the debates are by and large matters of opinion and thus somewhat moot. Buy and use what you like and wish you had the space and money for one of each.

Yeah, I saw on TV the other day that someone is building a robot vacumn cleaner. Why can't we have a robot tiller, then we could stay under the shade tree with the cooler!!! :)

John Deere has done some work with automated GPS guided farm equipment. There was a very intriguing photograph in a 2005 calender I had of a sleek four wheel drive tractor with no operators station. I would love to know more about this project if anyone has any information. Technology like this troubles me a bit, but I can't help being curious. I saw a solar powered self operating lawn mower a few years back that would continously mow the lawn at random.
